Today, "the Anarchy" is used to describe the period in English history from the death of Henry I in 1135 to the Treaty of Winchester signed by King Stephen and his successor Henry II in 1153. Despite the name, it was an episode of civil war rather than of lawlessness and is interesting for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it was the first time in English history that a woman claimed the throne of England in her own right.

Wie immer bei G/Geschichte wird sich dem Titelthema hier auf vielfältige Weise genähert - man erfährt nicht nur, warum Aachen die kaiserliche Lieblingsresidenz war oder was es mit dem Rolandslied auf sich hat, sondern es wird sich auch auf Spurensuche in Hinblick auf den Charakter Karls des Großen begeben.

Le due date hanno segnato la caduta dell'impero romano d'Occidente e la scoperta dell'America, eventi tradizionalmente intesi come l'inizio e la fine del Medioevo. Un'era che già nel nome sconta una sorta di peccato originario: essere una cesura tra la gloria dell'Antichità e lo sfavillio speranzoso del Rinascimento. Non fu così. Questo saggio si concentra sulla penisola italiana, il fulcro di gran parte delle vicende di quel millennio. L'Italia fu infatti la culla del papato, e al contempo zona di conquiste e cadute di grandi condottieri e imperatori.

"Età oscura" e "millennio della superstizione" sono solo due delle tante definizioni date, nel tempo, al Medioevo. Ma questo periodo storico fu davvero "buio" come si è ormai cristallizzato nell'immaginario collettivo? In realtà, la maggior parte degli studiosi del Nuovo Millennio afferma che quel periodo della storia dell'umanità contenga già, in embrione, molti degli aspetti determinanti dell'Europa moderna.

Il Medioevo, quello tradizionalmente compreso tra la fine del V e la fine del XV secolo, deve essere visto come un periodo molto più positivo di quel che si è creduto per tanto tempo. Ne sono stati protagonisti sovrani, principi, condottieri, filosofi, letterati, santi e pontefici, le cui vite e gesta questo saggio si propone di far rivivere. Una delle caratteristiche più significative e affascinanti del Medioevo visto attraverso i suoi uomini e le sue donne più celebri, è l'apparizione di nuove figure di eroi, anche femminili.

A torto ritenuto un'epoca immobile, il Medioevo è fatto anche di viaggi. Per ragioni politiche e per lavoro, per pregare o per studiare: viaggiano re e mercanti, pellegrini e fuorilegge, chierici e giullari, emarginati e cavalieri erranti. E si naviga nei fiumi, nei laghi, nei canali, nei mari e nell'oceano. Ma che cosa significava mettersi per strada lasciando la propria casa alle spalle, come si viaggiava in concreto, quali erano le conoscenze e le fantasie geografiche, quali i paesi conosciuti, quale il rapporto con le genti straniere?

Nel Medioevo le donne vivevano in una rigida sottomissione. Non assecondare la volontà della famiglia, non ubbidire agli uomini, padri, mariti o padroni, manifestare indipendenza di giudizio o di comportamento facevano di loro delle ribelli. Ma non sono mancate sante, regine, badesse, semplici monache, umili contadine, serve, schiave, eretiche, streghe, prostitute che hanno scelto di sottrarsi a destini segnati, resistendo, opponendosi, fuggendo. Donne decise a viaggiare, conoscere, insegnare, lavorare, combattere, predicare.

Anche nel Medioevo troviamo donne disposte a vendere il proprio corpo "pro pretio, lucro et questu": condannata e ritenuta una vergogna, la prostituzione era però considerata ineliminabile e persino necessaria. Giustificabile, perché salvava da mali peggiori come la corruzione delle vergini e delle spose e "l'abominevole vizio della sodomia". Ma qual era la posizione della Chiesa e dei pubblici poteri nel regolare questo fenomeno divenuto assai rilevante? Nel Trecento, infatti, si assiste ovunque in Europa al proliferare dei postriboli, a volte quasi piccole fortezze del piacere.

Una strada, o meglio una rete di strade, un fascio di percorsi terrestri e marittimi hanno spostato nel corso dei secoli uomini, merci e conoscenze dall'estremità orientale dell'Asia sino al Mediterraneo e all'Europa. Romantica e recente, l'espressione "via della seta" restituisce il senso di un mondo vasto, attraversato fin dai tempi antichi da guerre e conflitti ma animato anche dal fervore di scambi commerciali, culturali e politici. Fra montagne e altipiani per questo cammino sono transitati spezie, animali, ceramiche, cobalto, carta, e naturalmente la seta.

Gerusalemme è dappertutto. Una presenza di cui l'Italia è investita per intero, grazie a un dialogo intessuto da secoli che trova espressione in ogni rigo della sua storia, in ogni pietra delle sue città. Una volta divenuti inaccessibili i Luoghi Santi, lembi di Terra Santa vennero infatti ricreati nel nostro paese. E intraprendere il cammino penitenziale attraverso santuari come il Sacro Monte di Varallo, il complesso delle Sette Chiese a Bologna, il Santo Volto di Lucca, San Vivaldo, Acquapendente nel Senese, il Santo Sepolcro di Brindisi significa ritrovarne le memorie.

This is a book about how medieval weapons were used, according to medieval people who used them. It discusses the use of eight weapons or weapon combinations from the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, selected with an eye toward their iconic status in popular culture, as well as five different combative contexts. The aim of this book is to familiarize the listener with the use of medieval weaponry in a general way. It is not a how-to book on martial arts, but the listener will come away with a fresh appreciation for the sophistication of medieval fencing.

The Tudor dynasty died out because there was no heir of Elizabeth I's body to succeed her. Henry VIII, despite his six marriages, had produced no legitimate son who would live into old age. Three of the reigning Tudors (Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I) died without heirs apparent, the most tragic case being that of Mary Tudor, who went through two recorded cases of phantom pregnancy. Despite the pope’s aversion to temporal glory, his authority tended to fill the vacuum in the West left when the last Western Roman emperor, Romulus Augustus, was deposed in 476. The pope would continue to do so until 800, when Charlemagne would allow himself to be crowned Emperor of the West in Rome upon receiving his crown from Pope Leo III. This created modern Europe and was the culmination of two centuries of papal policy aimed at securing its independence from the Byzantine Empire in Constantinople.
