No Sumerian myths have been recovered dealing directly and explicitly with the creation of the Universe; what little is known about the Sumerian cosmogonic ideas has been inferred and deduced from laconic statements scattered throughout the literary documents. We have several myths concerned with the organization of the Universe and its cultural processes, the creation of man, and the establishment of civilization.

Assyria, frequently referred to as the Assyrian Empire, was a Mesopotamian kingdom and empire in the Ancient Near East that lasted from maybe the 25th century BC (in the form of the Assur city-state till its collapse between 612 BC and 605 BC, covering the Early to Middle Bronze Age to the Late Iron Age). Assyria was a Semitic-speaking kingdom based upon the Tigris River in Upper Mesopotamia, an area that included Northern Iraq, Northeast Syria, and Southeast Turkey, and also fringe parts of Northwest Iran in modern-day terms.

For a year, abandoned palace menageries, Green Zone politicking, raw violence, Saddam Hussein’s stolen Arabian horses, wounded bears, and checkpoint puppies spiraled the recovery into animal welfare theater.

The Gulf War took place between August 1990 and February 1991, when Iraq, led by Saddam Hussein, invaded neighboring Kuwait, a small, oil-rich country in the Middle East. These are the combat experiences of the first Marine to command a special operations task force, recounted against a backdrop of his journey from raw Second Lieutenant to seasoned Colonel and Task Force Commander; from leading Marines through the streets of Mogadishu, Baghdad, Fallujah and Mosul to directing multi-national special operations forces in a dauntingly complex fight against a formidable foe.

He is trained and ready for war. Instead of leading the Marines into combat, a Marine captain is given the mission of advising an Iraqi army battalion in one of the most violent cities in Iraq. The collected stories span seven months of nearly constant combat in 2006 and 2007, at the height of the insurgency in Iraq. This audiobook is the raw, visceral story of a combat adviser with a lot more combat than advising.

In that time, Arabness was a mark of cosmopolitanism, of intellectualism.
