Recently unemployed, John Huxford accepts an offer to work at Sheridan & Moore, Montreal in Quebec. He agrees with his fiancée that he will first travel alone to prepare everything for a few weeks before she can join him. Unfortunately, weeks, months pass and she gets no news from John. Sheridan & Moore even say they never saw him in Montreal. Many years pass, and it seems that he has died somewhere or started a new life.

In 1921, an unnamed monster-hunter travels to Tempest Mountain, in the Catskills range, after reports of various attacks by a group of unidentified creatures against the local inhabitants reaches the media. A month before, an unusually large, destructive thunderstorm had drifted over the region.

In Beyond the Wall of Sleep, an intern in a mental hospital relates his experiences with Joe Slater, a backward Catskills mountain man and now inmate at a hospital for the criminally insane. The inmate was having very strange and vivid dreams which he described in a way seemingly impossible for a man of his limited intellect. The intern decides to use a device he built but never tested, a device that could be used for two-way telepathic communication to monitor the man's dreams. What he discovers is both astonishing and frightening.

The story involves a mine that uncovers a very deep chasm, too deep for any sounding lines to hit bottom. The night after the discovery of the abyss the narrator and one of the mine's workers, a Mexican called Juan Romero, venture together inside the mine, drawn against their will by a mysterious rhythmical throbbing in the ground. Romero reaches the abyss first and is swallowed by it. The narrator peers over the edge, sees something – "but God, I dare not tell you what I saw!" and loses consciousness. The next morning, the narrator and the deceased Romero are both found in their bunks.

The Tree is a macabre short story by American horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft. It was written in 1920, and published in October 1921 in The Tryout. Set in ancient Greece, the story concerns two sculptors who accept a commission with ironic consequences. Lovecraft wrote The Tree early in his career. The story begins with the narrator describing the night sky as observed over long sleepless nights from his window, in particular that of the Pole Star, Polaris, which he describes as "winking hideously like an insane watching eye which strives to convey some strange message, yet recalls nothing save that it once had a message to convey". "Crooken Sands" is a short story by Bram Stoker. It was first published in the UK in the December 1, 1894 issue of Holly Leaves the Christmas Number of The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, London. The story describes in gory detail how an American tourist in the German city of Nuremberg accidentally kills a kitten. It goes on to describe, in equally gory detail, how the kitten's mother gets revenge on the American.

"A Gipsy Prophecy" is a short story by Bram Stoker. It was first published in the December 26, 1885 issue of the Saturday newspaper The Spirit of the Times, New York. Due to the Christmas holiday this issue was released on Wednesday December 23, 1885 as "The Christmas Spirit." It was a lovely evening in the summer; the very air was full of rest and quiet happiness, as though an outward type of the peacefulness and joy which made a heaven of the home of the young married folk.
