In The Ancient Wisdom of Baseball, author Christian Sheppard interweaves Homer’s epics with glorious stories from the green fields of America’s pastime, celebrating Achilles’ courage and Odysseus’ cunning along with the virtues of Hall of Fame players such as Jackie Robinson and Babe Ruth and of great teams such as the 2004 Red Sox and the 2016 Cubs. Along the way, Sheppard humorously recollects trying to raise his baby daughter true to the teachings of ancient myth and his beloved game.

When we think of philosophy that can guide us in our everyday lives, we are more likely to think of Ancient Greece or Rome than we are 20th-century Mexico. But Mexican philosophy, which came into focus in the last century, following the Mexican Revolution, is a rich and wide-ranging tradition with much to offer readers today. Emerging in defiance of the Western philosophy bound up with colonial power—first brought to Mexico with the Augustinians in the 16th century, and, like so much else, imposed on Mexicans for centuries after that—it boasts a range of powerful ideas and advice.

Is distance real? Is the speed of light the ultimate speed of our own human perception of physical sight, not of the world? Why is it a living mind does not need artificial energy, and cannot be unplugged? Histories of philosophy and the sciences sometimes mention perceptions without showing any curiosity towards why we all must perceive in the first place. They merely explain our vision by describing physical organs of our bodies, such as eyes or brains, which cannot see or think on their own.

With vast erudition, Foucault cuts across disciplines and reaches back into seventeenth century to show how classical systems of knowledge, which linked all of nature within a great chain of being and analogies between the stars in the heavens and the features in a human face, gave way to the modern sciences of biology, philology, and political economy. The result is nothing less than an archaeology of the sciences that unearths old patterns of meaning and reveals the shocking arbitrariness of our received truths.

Was steckt hinter dem Lächerlichen?

The human race has accepted the word God unquestionably from time immemorial. Which has resulted in an avalanche of diverse faiths warring with each other. To circumvent this and present the true nature of God the thesis provides adequate literature. God is the supreme Self, a Sakshi, a detached Witness of activities of the body, mind and intellect. A role in beings which fits in with that of petrol in vehicles. Petrol is a sakshi which activates vehicles while witnessing the best or worst of their performances.

Madness, sexuality, power, knowledge—are these facts of life or simply parts of speech? In a series of works of astonishing brilliance, historian Michel Foucault excavated the hidden assumptions that govern the way we live and the way we think. The Archaeology of Knowledge begins at the level of things aid and moves quickly to illuminate the connections between knowledge, language, and action in a style at once profound and personal. A summing up of Foucault's own methodological assumptions, this book is also a first step toward a genealogy of the way we live now.
