Die APOLOGIE ist die literarische Wiedergabe und Gestaltung der Verteidigungsrede Sokrates vor dem athenischen Gericht im Jahr 399 v.d.Z. durch den philosophischen Schriftsteller Platon. Der betagte Sokrates, deren Schüler Platon war, ist vor dem ›Volksgericht‹ der athenischen Polis, einer Auswahl von 500 Bürgern, der Asebie, der Gotteslästerung und Verführung der Jugend Athens angeklagt. Im Falle der Verurteilung droht ihm die Todesstrafe in der für ihn als athenischen Bürger privilegierten Form der Verabreichung eines Gift-Trankes, eines Schierlings-Bechers.

"Warum überhaupt Wahrheit ?"– wenn, wie Nietzsche in diesem Stück aus den ›Nachgelassenen Schriften‹ betont, der Intellekt "als ein Mittel zur Erhaltung des Individuums, (...) seine Hauptkräfte in der Verstellung [entfaltet]". Auch die Sprache als vermeintliche Erfassung der Dinge be- schreibt Nietzsche als vitale Illussion und ein "bewegliches Heer von Metaphern". Nebenher bereitet er hiermit die bahnbrechende Sprachkritik Wittgensteins vor. Aber gleichwohl beschreibt Nietzsche auch einen "Trieb zur Wahrheit".
