Auf der Königsburg Salneck lebte der König Waldung mit seiner Gemahlin Liebgart. Sie hatten eine gar schöne Tochter, namens Hildburg, und so sehr liebten sie ihre Tochter, dass sie beschlossen hatten, sie solle sich nimmer von ihnen trennen und niemals eines Mannes Gemahl werden. Hugdietrich, der König von Kostenopel, hatte von der Schönheit Hildburgs gehört und beschloss, sie mit List zu erobern. Er erschien eines Tages als junge Frau verkleidet auf dem Plan vor der Königsburg Salneck und schlug dort seine Zelte auf.

Ger, der König des Irenlandes war gestorben. Witwe wurde seine Gattin Ute, und beider Sohn Siegband besteig den Königsthron des Irenlandes. Sieben Fürsten mit viertausend Recken waren untertan dem jungen Könige. Unter all diesen Recken aber war im Kampf-Spiel der beste Jung-Siegband, des Landes König. Als nun die Trauerzeit vorüber war, mahnte Frau Ute ihren königlichen Sohn, nach den Sitten des Landes ein Weib zu freien. Genug Trauer sei im Lande gewesen, und in Freude sollte sich der Schmerz verkehren. Frau Ute warb für ihren Sohn um eine Jungfrau von Noregs Felsenstrand, die gleich ihr Ute genannt wurde.

Mit aufgebundenen Helmen und hocherhobenen Speeren nahten die beiden Kämpfer auf ihren Streitrossen der Stelle der Schranken, wo der König mit der Königin saß. Hier verneigten sie sich und baten den König noch einmal, das Gottesurteil zwischen ihnen stattfinden zu lassen. Der König nickte Gewähr; die Trompeten schmetterten, die Ritter banden sich die Helme zu und sprengten jeder an ein Ende des weiten Platzes, um auf das gegebene Zeichen der Kampfrichter aufeinander los zu stürzen.
