Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born on the 16th October 1854 in Dublin Ireland. His only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray was published in 1890 and he then moved on to writing for the stage with Salome in 1891. His society comedies produced enormous hits and turned him into one of the most successful writers of late Victorian London. He died destitute in Paris at the age of forty-six sipping champagne a friend had brought with the line ‘Alas I am dying beyond my means’.

According to biographer D. J. Taylor, the young Orwell displayed 'an enthusiasm for poetry that in [his] formative years seems to have been as least as strong as any desire to write fiction'. Orwell's poetry is not among his best known – or most highly praised – work, but nonetheless shares similar concerns to (and displays the dry sense of humour present in) his prose. Mere foothills in the range of Orwell's work perhaps – but building up to the summits later scaled. Contents:. Awake young men of England. The Italian soldier shook my hand. Kitchener. Romance.

Omar Khayyám (1048–1122) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, and a philosopher who was not known as a poet in his lifetime. Later, a body of quatrains became attached to his name, although not all were his works. These verses lay in obscurity until 1859, when Edward FitzGerald (1809–1883), an English country gentleman, published a free adaptation of this Persian poetry. After its discovery by D. G. Rossetti and others, the verse became extremely popular.
