A landmark of supernatural fiction and cosmic horror, The House on the Borderland is a haunting tale that blurs the boundaries between reality, nightmare, and the unknown. When two travellers discover the ruins of an isolated house and the strange manuscript left behind by its former occupant, they uncover an extraordinary account of terrifying visions, otherworldly beings, and journeys through time and space.

Known for his nautical themes, William Hope Hodgson begins this story with a small rowing boat in distress and its sailor regaling a tragic tale. This story differs from many in the botanical gothic genre in that it features sinister fungi, as opposed to the traditional vines, flowers or trees.

In the distant future, the sun has burned out, plunging the world into perpetual twilight. All of the remaining humanity has dwindled to a single, eight-mile-high pyramid called The Last Redoubt. Horrific creatures have evolved that lurk in the darkness. From the observatory at the peak of the pyramid the Monstruwacans observe the surrounding Night Land to detect and monitor the huge monstrous forces that surround the redoubt. When a young observer telepath starts hearing a woman’s voice in his head he realises that somewhere out there in the dark, there are other humans.

He is starving and urgently wants food - but despite this, he will not approach the ship and vehemently rejects the idea of being rescued. Instead they have to float some provisions out to him in a crate, which he takes off to a nearby island where his fiancée is dying of hunger.
