Written in a tongue-in-cheek style by a teenage boy to his best buds, Birth of a Hero explores on a deeper level what it means to go on with your life, particularly after experiencing an unthinkable trauma. Even more precisely, it speaks to what a family is and how we become bonded to one another. It is part love letter to the comic book world and part coming-of-age tale.

Mica Powers is thirteen, awaiting his Spinical abilities to manifest. He struggles with the memory of the day his mother was taken from him by the leader of the Dreads, Deedra. Alongside his best friends—the quick-witted twins Kevin and Kelly—he attends the Domain Arizona School of Spinical Studies, where students learn to unlock their Imperia. When a mysterious orphan named Estee Bradford arrives, she struggles to find her place, and Mica forms a bond with her.
