A man named Adolphe visits Leroux at his office at the Morning Journal and delivers to him a chest that was bequeathed to him by his friend Theophraste Longuet. Leroux begins investigating its contents and relates the very strange experience of Longuet. While visiting a famous prison, Theophraste Longuet, a retired rubber stamp manufacturer, is possessed by the spirit of Cartouche, a criminal who plagued Paris in the 18th century.

En 1913 le journaliste Rouletabille s'est fait envoyer en Bulgarie par son journal pour rendre compte de la guerre des Balkans, car il est amoureux d'une jeune Bulgare rencontrée à Paris : Ivana, la nièce du général Vilitchkov. Dans le roman qui précède celui-ci il l'a délivrée du Château Noir où la tenait prisonnière l'ennemi de sa famille, Gaulow, devenu Turc sous le nom de Kara-Selim. Mais elle a maintenant un comportement bizarre qui déroute Rouletabille et risque de faire tomber aux mains des Turcs les plans de guerre de son oncle qui se trouvent dans le précieux coffret byzantin dont s'est emparé Gaulow sans savoir ce qu'il contient.

In fact,Leroux's contribution to French detective fiction is considered a parallel to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's in the United Kingdom and Edgar Allan Poe's in America. First published in French as a serial in 1909, "The Phantom of the Opera" is a riveting story that revolves around the young, Swedish Christine Daaé. Her father, a famous musician, dies, and she is raised in the Paris Opera House with his dying promise of a protective angel of music to guide her. After a time at the opera house, she begins hearing a voice, who eventually teaches her how to sing beautifully. All goes well until Christine's childhood friend Raoul comes to visit his parents, who are patrons of the opera, and he sees Christine when she begins successfully singing on the stage.

“Misterio del cuarto amarillo" es clásico de la literatura policiaca y de intriga en la que su protagonista, el periodista Rouletabille se ve enfrentado al reto de despejar un enigma aparentemente irresoluble, un crimen contra Mathilde Stangerson, hija soltera y ya mayor de un científico, el doctor Stangerson. Los hechos ocurrieron en el castillo del Glandier un edificio muy antiguo y una habitación cerrada escuchar los gritos de auxilio de la víctima desde su interior, disparos, ruidos de golpes y muebles que se caen, pero nadie puede entrar a socorrer a la joven que está siendo atacada.

Ce dernier en profite pour revoir la femme dont il est éperdument amoureux, Ivana. La jeune Bulgare lui raconte comment ses parents et sa sœur sont morts par la main du terrible bandit Gaulow.
