    How does tradition come about? Cultural anthropologists like to argue vehemently about this, as evidenced by countless research papers. You could read them all – or visit the Oktoberfest. Because that’s where you’ll find traditions in more differing stages of development than possibly anywhere else: old, firmly established traditions, carefully preserved and passed on; recurring rituals, still fresh and young but gradually evolving into traditions; and every year, a few new trends that will leave you wondering if they’ll become a tradition or just fade away. In this episode of “Simply Munich – The Podcast” our reporter Flo Schairer sets out to discover the origins of some of the traditions at the Wiesn, as the Oktoberfest is known locally. Along the way, he not only learns a great deal about the history of the world’s largest folk festival but also dives into the crowds and even witnesses a beheading.
