How does tradition come about? Cultural anthropologists like to argue vehemently about this, as evidenced by countless research papers. You could read them all – or visit the Oktoberfest. Because that’s where you’ll find traditions in more differing stages of development than possibly anywhere else: old, firmly established traditions, carefully preserved and passed on; recurring rituals, still fresh and young but gradually evolving into traditions; and every year, a few new trends that will leave you wondering if they’ll become a tradition or just fade away.
