No murder weapon. No DNA. The man prosecutors say pulled the trigger has been dead since 1998. And yet Duane "Keffe D" Davis is on trial in Las Vegas for the murder of Tupac Shakur, largely because of what came out of his own mouth over the past fifteen years. He described his alleged role to the LAPD in a 2008 proffer session. He repeated it on BET's "Death Row Chronicles." He wrote it down in detail in his 2019 memoir, claiming he handed the gun to his nephew Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson and gave the order after a fight at the MGM Grand. Then came the 2023 arrest, and a very different Keffe D showed up. He told ABC News he's innocent. He said the whole story was invented to sell books. He even claimed he wasn't in Las Vegas the night Tupac died, contradicting his own memoir. Judge Carli Kierny has ruled his statements from all of it admissible, and the immunity argument built around that 2008 proffer has already been rejected. Las Vegas police had what they needed by 2009. The arrest took fourteen more years. Along the way, Davis burned through three legal teams and picked up a battery conviction behind bars. He's 63 now, charged with murder with a deadly weapon and a gang enhancement, facing life without parole, and he's pleaded not guilty. Mopreme Shakur says his family has waited thirty years for a courtroom. That courtroom is open now, and the only witness against Davis might be Davis himself, across three different platforms, over fifteen years, in his own words, before he ever expected any of it to end up in front of a jury.

The only man ever charged in Tupac Shakur's murder is standing trial in Las Vegas, and what the prosecution is walking in with may surprise you. There is no recovered gun. There is no DNA. Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, Duane "Keffe D" Davis's nephew and the man prosecutors say opened fire from the back seat of the white Cadillac, denied involvement and was killed in Compton in 1998. He can't be cross-examined. Judge Carli Kierny has ruled the state's central evidence admissible, which means the jury hears it directly. Davis is 63, has pleaded not guilty, and faces one count of murder with a deadly weapon carrying a gang enhancement. He's been jailed since his arrest in Henderson in September 2023. Since then he's told ABC News he's innocent and that he talked about the killing to make money. Every defense motion has been denied, including the immunity claim tied to a 2008 proffer with an LAPD task force investigating the murder of Christopher Wallace. Las Vegas police had those 2008 statements by 2009. Davis wasn't arrested for another fourteen years. Tupac was 25 when he was shot. His mother Afeni died in 2016 without answers.

In "Compton Street Legend," published in 2019, Duane "Keffe D" Davis described in detail his alleged role in the murder of Tupac Shakur. He placed himself in the white Cadillac. He described providing the gun to his nephew Orlando Anderson. He described the motive — retaliation for Anderson being beaten by members of Tupac's entourage at the MGM Grand on the night of September 7, 1996.

Davis had told the same story before — to the LAPD in a 2008 proffer session and on BET's documentary series. But the book took it further, putting it in Davis's own words, on the public record, in print.

Las Vegas prosecutors say that book is what brought the case back to life. A grand jury indicted Davis in 2023, and his trial is set to begin. He faces a single count of murder with a deadly weapon with gang enhancement — and life without parole if convicted.

Davis now says he fabricated the entire account for financial gain. He has claimed he was not even in Las Vegas the night Tupac was killed — a statement that contradicts every prior version of the story he told over fifteen years.
