Keffe D told LAPD investigators in 2008 that Sean "Diddy" Combs offered him a million dollars for the killing of Tupac Shakur. Two days in a Las Vegas courtroom, and Duane "Keffe D" Davis keeps handing the jury reasons not to believe him. This recap combines Monday's and Tuesday's testimony — Day 5 and Day 6 — in the trial over Tupac Shakur's 1996 murder. Monday's tape was a 2009 police interview: Davis walking detectives through the hunt that started at Club 662, a .40 Glock pulled from a hidden compartment, his nephew Orlando Anderson firing the gun, and his own claim that the bullets were meant for Suge Knight, not for Tupac. Jurors that day also heard from the photographer who captured the last picture ever taken of Tupac alive, and from a BET director who testified Davis was paid to sit for documentary interviews — interviews where he called himself the last man standing who could tell the real story, partly built on a sealed police recording that made its way to production through consultants tied to the original investigation. Tuesday's tape was a 2017 recording where Davis says Sean "Puffy" Combs wanted Suge Knight "taken care of," and where he describes calling Combs after the shooting and never hearing back. The defense fought to keep the recording out. The judge let it in. And when Davis was finally asked, directly, if he had anything to say to Tupac's family, what he gave them wasn't an apology. Combs has denied any involvement in Tupac's death and has never been charged. Davis remains the only person ever charged in the 1996 killing. Under two hours. Three witnesses. That was the entire defense in the murder trial of the only man ever charged in Tupac Shakur's killing.

Two former officers testified about seeing a light-colored Cadillac at Suge Knight's house the night of the shooting, leaving as part of a convoy with Tupac's BMW. Then Dan Long — the detective who led the investigation for fifteen years — testified he couldn't verify key claims from Davis's 2009 interview. But the prosecution's cross revealed Davis had identified the same four men the investigation already suspected. Long also said he tried to arrest Davis in 2009 and was told by prosecutors to stand down.

Davis did not take the stand. The prosecution rested without rebuttal. Closing arguments Monday. The jury decides next week.

The prosecution rested its case in the Tupac Shakur murder trial after eight days and twenty-five witnesses. The final exhibit was a recorded jail call — and four words from Duane "Keffe D" Davis that the fiction defense can't touch.

A former Compton gang detective told the jury on Day 7 what Duane "Keffe D" Davis was inside the South Side Compton Crips — and why that identity matters more than who pulled the trigger.

Robert Ladd identified Davis by a specific gang title and explained to the jury what a person with that title does. He doesn't carry the gun. He doesn't fire. He decides. Tupac's childhood friend Malcolm Greenidge testified that the shots came from the back seat of the white Cadillac. Davis, according to the prosecution, was in the front. Ladd's testimony tells the jury why that distinction is the entire case. Greenidge also told the jury what Tupac was building at twenty-five — his own label, an album with the Outlawz, and talks with Quincy Jones, his fiancée Kidada Jones's father.

All three other men allegedly in the Cadillac that night are dead. Davis is the sole survivor. Crime scene analysts showed the jury what he kept in his Henderson home for decades — his book and newspaper clippings about the murder.
