    Have you ever wondered why some people become Christian missionaries to foreign countries and engage in that pursuit for the rest of their lives? Today's broadcast features a message by the late missionary, Darrell Champlin.

    Darrell Champlin (1932-2015) served as a missionary for 61 years before passing away in 2015. He and his wife were missionaries first in the Congo (Zaire), Africa and then in Suriname, South America. Darrell was greatly used of Christ in Africa and South America to start over 20 local churches and establish 7 schools, 1 Bible Institute, and 2 Medical Clinics.

    Have you ever considered what is meant by the word, "evangelism" in the Christian life or ministry? The current fad regarding discipleship has renewed interest in understanding what evangelism means and how it pertains to Christ's missional statement in Matthew 28:18-20 (KJV). Many today regard certain methods or practices of personal evangelism and local church outreach to be "easy-believism" or "quick prayerism."

    Today's message is by a pastor and foreign missionary who passed away a long time ago. The sermon was preached in the middle 1990s at the height of the Seeker-Sensitive approach to ministry. The theme of the sermon is in contradiction to the ministry philosophies regarding outreach that have been popular over the last 30 years.     Have you ever wondered why some organizations get special attention by our governmental leaders? It seems that politicians, especially, are particularly fond of singling out certain kinds of corporations for praise and favor or denigration and regulation. Yet, despite these circumstances these kinds of business keep delivering the goods and services to the public.

    In a similar fashion, it seems that Christ, through the Apostle John, has a special authoritative message for seven specific churches. We know from the introduction in Revelation 1:4 that the message of Revelation is directed at seven named local congregations and their pastors. Christ reinforces this when He says to the Apostle John, in Revelation 1:19-20:

    Rev 1:19-20 (19) Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter; (20) The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

    It is clear from the following letters or messages to those specific congregations, and their pastors represent something more than just a group of believers meeting in a specific place, with particular needs and concerns. Some have declared that these churches represent phases or eras of Church history leading to the Great Tribulation. Others have declared that these congregations represent a time that has come and gone. Yet, what is clear from the text is that these churches represent, a minimum, seven kinds of churches that will be present throughout the current era of Christian history from the first century until now. As we study the Scriptures, we will discover that these seven local churches represent seven types of churches.


    1. Ephesus: Loveless Righteousness (Rev. 2:1-7)

    2. Smyrna (Izmir): Faithful Perseverance (Rev. 2:8-11)

    3. Pergamum: False Doctrine and Compromise (Rev. 2:12-16)

    4. Thyatira: False Teachers and spiritualized sexual immorality (Rev. 2:17-29)

    5. Sardis: Compromised Identity (Rev. 3:1-6)

    6. Philadelphia: Faithful Consistency (Rev. 3:7-13)

    7. Laodicea: Complacent Apostacy (Rev. 3:14-22)

    Concluding Thoughts:

    We can see from our text that Christ has something to say to the church members and their pastors of seven different local church congregations. May we reflect on Christ’s words and ask ourselves, am I the kind of Christian that Christ can praise or rebuke? Am I a member of a local congregation that Christ can praise or rebuke?

Have you ever wondered what happened to all of the well-known churches and ministries that flourished in previous decades or generations?Dr. Elmer Towns wrote three influential books that featured the most successful ministries of the late 1960s and early 1970s: The Ten Largest Sunday Schools—And What Makes Them Grow (1969); America’s Fastest Growing Churches (1972); Great Soulwinning Churches (1973). These three books would become the catalyst for the emergence of the Church Growth Movement. A cursory review of the churches listed in these books quickly reveals that most of them do not exist any longer. Furthermore, the pastors of these churches have passed away in death, moved on to other ministries, or became castaways from the ministry for moral, ethical, or legal reasons. Experts who study church life have discovered that individual congregations, denominations, or movements have a lifecycle that closely mirrors the bell curve: they start humbly, grow, plateau, decline, then die. Congregational death could be as simple as a name change to jumpstart growth or as dramatic as a church splitting so that the original congregation ceases to exist. Most churches die because they decide to dissolve for lack of congregants and attendees. As we journey through the Scriptures, we will discover what the Bible reveals about the lifecycle of the local church. We will learn that most local churches teeter on the brink of death through Christ’s judgment upon them. Thus, we must understand that . . .Every local church can become judged by Christ and consigned to death.Why? 1. Because they become inwardly focused (Acts 6:1)Acts 6:1 (1) And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. The local church at Ephesus (A Formal Church) Rev. 2:4 (4) Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. The local church at Laodicea (A Church with No Purpose) Rev. 3:16 (16) So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. How does lukewarmness set into a local congregation so that it transitions to an inwardly focused community of believers? By becoming filled with duplicity and dishonesty Acts 5:1-3 (1) But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, (2) And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. (3) But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? By becoming filled with prejudices and preferences Acts 11:1-2 (1) And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. (2) And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, By becoming infiltrated by false teachers bringing in false doctrine Acts 15:1 (1) And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved. It is a word that gets thrown around and it is almost a cliche instead of something that is more substantive. It seems like, ever so often, some news report comes out declaring that revival has come to a church or a group of people. What is genuine biblical revival? In this episode, we will examine the characteristics of biblical revival. Text: Hab. 3:2 (2) O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.1. Revival originates with God AlmightyIsaiah 44:3 (3) For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:2. Revival blossoms among His People 2 Chronicles 7:14 (14) If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.3. Revival burdens with Conviction Isa. 6:5 (5) Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.4.     Have you ever been in a situation where you had to make a choice or a decision with limited information, such make a purchase, accepting a new job, or moving from location to another? Have you ever found yourself struggling between two competing interests in your life, such as personal desires verses employment or financial concerns? It can be a bit frustrating to navigate the uncertainties of life that we are confronted with from time-to-time.

    The current uncertainties of our present hour impose upon us choices and decisions that we must make in moving forward with our lives. These kind of uncertainties that we face are called dilemmas.

    In psychology and counseling these terms are called ethical or moral dilemmas. Ethical dilemmas are defined as: situations in which difficult choices have to be made between two courses of action, either of which entails transgressing a moral principle (Oxford Dictionary). Another way to define ethical dilemmas are to understand them as conflicts between alternatives where, no matter what a person does, some other ethical principle will be compromised.

    No doubt the Apostles in our text are faced with just such an ethical dilemma: obey God or comply with the Sanhedrin? The situation in our nation is forcing similar ethical dilemmas for Christians: obey the Bible or compromise with the ever changing social and political realities in order have a peaceful and prosperous existence.

    Therefore, as we examine the Scriptures, we will learn that…

    Every believer can overcome the uncertainty of the times.

    How?

    1. By understanding that spiritual influence motivates opposition (v.17-18).

    2. By remembering God’s Divine protection over your life (v.19-20, 34-40).

    3. By continuing on in your walk with Christ (v.21a, 25, 42).

    4. By standing up for your beliefs and values (v.29-32).

    5. By having a proper attitude and response to persecution and injustice (v.41)

    Concluding Thoughts:

    We are living in a time of uncertainty. Political, social, and economic turmoil abounds. Our hearts and minds ponder our survival, sustainment, and futures as the times forge ahead. One writer has observed that human society goes through a period of upheaval and change every 500 years. She states that the last period of change was the Protestant Reformation. It has been 500 years since the Protestant Reformation. Moreover, the doomsday voices on radio, the internet, and television have people stirred up, hopeless, and desperate. Christians ought not to live in a state of survivalist panic and paranoia.

    We must remember who we serve and who we will give an account to someday. Jesus said, “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matt. 10:28). In the end, when faced with the dilemma over obeying Christ or government, we should heed the example of the Apostles and tell the world, “We ought to obey God rather than men.” Therefore, we gladly take on the negative, condescending, and inflammatory epithets of human derision as badges of honor in solidarity with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who was despised and rejected of men.
