Welcome to Voice Notes. My name’s Nikesh Shukla. I’m a writer, of books, of scripts, of poems, and of creative writing newsletters. And now, I have a podcast. Yes, yes, another man with a podcast. I’m sorry. But look, I’m hoping this will be a helpful podcast. One of my favourite podcasts I ever listened, I think one of the first, was called Martini Shot, with Rob Long. Rob Long wrote on some of my favourite sitcoms, like Cheers and Golden Girls and more, and his short sharp podcasts, in the tone of his books Conversations with my Agent and Set up joke set up joke, was charming stories about the writer’s life that contained a gift, a tip, a lesson. So in that spirit, I present to you voice notes, a short sharp gift, tip, lesson on writing. You know that voice note joke we have on messaging apps when we’re a few minutes into a rambling anecdote when we note the length of it and say, wow, this is more like a podcast, well imagine getting one of those podcast-length voice notes from your pal shuks on writing. You’re struggling with dialogue, setting, character, with endings, beginnings, the name of your novel, and you’re like, if only I had a writer friend to pop into my ear with a voice note about craft, well, here it is. Season 1 is going to be 20 of these episodes. They’ll be monologues in my low mumbly rambly voice so I’ll keep em short, 5-10 minutes.
