Twenty five years ago today our world changed forever. Episode 144 of Useless Assumptions opens with a moment of reflection for September 11 2001 . We want to take a moment to honor every first responder who ran toward the towers and every man and woman in uniform who answered the call in the years that followed. We will never forget what happened on that day and we will never forget the people who gave everything. If you were alive on September 11 2001 you remember exactly where you were when you heard the news. This episode starts there.

We also take a moment on this episode to pay tribute to Charlie Kirk.

Then we get into the show.

Nebraska football is back and it looked good. The Huskers beat Ohio 49-21 in the season opener at Memorial Stadium in front of 85,000 fans in 91 degree heat. New quarterback Anthony Colandrea threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns and ran for one more. Freshman Jamal Rule rushed for 122 yards and scored three times becoming the first Nebraska freshman running back to rush for 100 yards in an opener since 2004. We break down the game and talk about what we actually saw.

The NFL season is officially underway. The defending champion Seattle Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 13-10 in the Wednesday night opener but lost starting quarterback Sam Darnold to a hip injury on the very first drive of the season. Drew Lock finished the game and won it. Drake Maye threw a costly interception. A.J. Brown made his Patriots debut and got hurt. We talk through what it all means and share the Aaron Rodgers clips you need to see from Sunday.

On the local front Norfolk Avenue milling finally started after weeks of delays. The Norfolk Police Station project now has 5.1 million dollars collected through the half cent sales tax. We give you the update on where things stand.

In national news the Lindsay Clancy mistrial continues to generate headlines as three jurors spoke out publicly this week. The jury was split 11 to 1. The foreperson said the holdout admitted he had reasonable doubt and then refused to apply it anyway. The defense attorney said the jury was robbed by one man. We lay out everything the jurors said and what happens next.

An Amazon cargo jet ran off the runway at Miami International Airport this week and the NTSB is investigating.

Trump promised every American adult a five thousand dollar dividend check if Republicans win both chambers of Congress in November. No funding source was described. We talk about what that actually means.

And Utah Republican Governor Spencer Cox went on The Daily Show and said something that is worth discussing. He said four times as many Americans have now lost a friend or family member over politics and that politics has become a religion replacing the faith communities and civic organizations that once held this country together. We think there is something real in what he said and we get into it.

Then Clay Travis doubles down on his fight with the WNBA, putting ten million dollars on the table for the Las Vegas Aces to play a boys high school team and threatening to launch an all trans franchise called the Nashville Balls. We also break down the Husker outlook for the season and Dylan Raiola taking a shot at Nebraska on his way out the door to Oregon.

Chairman Ken Martin reportedly threw his phone at a junior aide's desk after chewing the staffer out, an incident that shook the aides who saw it and led to an HR inquiry, though Martin apologized the next business day. On top of that, deed records show the DNC put its own headquarters up as collateral for a $15 million loan, the largest off year loan in the party's history, while federal filings show the DNC sitting on about $16.3 million in cash against more than $18.5 million in debt. Compare that to the RNC, which is reporting around $128.5 million in cash and zero debt, a cash advantage of more than $110 million heading into the midterms.
