Untrained explores a paradox of technological progress: the more capable our tools become, the less we need to exercise some of our own abilities. We stopped hunting and walking long distances, only to invent gyms centuries later. We stopped memorizing phone numbers, navigating without maps, and doing calculations in our heads because technology could do those things for us. Now artificial intelligence is beginning another transformation. What happens when we also outsource writing, remembering, analyzing, imagining, and deciding? Through history, science, and stories from everyday life, Untrained examines the moments when major technologies changed not only what humans could do, but also what we no longer needed to do. From agriculture and machines to GPS, smartphones, and AI, the series asks what progress takes away as well as what it gives us—and whether a future of mental gyms may be closer than we think.

  • Artificial Intelligence: The Brain Gets Automated
    2026/08/27

Artificial intelligence can already write, summarize, research, compare information, and propose solutions in seconds. For the first time, an everyday tool can intervene in several stages of intellectual work at once. This episode explores what we gain by automating part of our cognitive effort and what may happen to the abilities we practice less in the process. The challenge is not deciding whether thinking with machines is good or bad, but understanding a new distinction: getting an answer may become increasingly easy, while evaluating it, understanding it, and deciding what to do with it remains a different task.

  • The Phone That Started Remembering for Us
    2026/08/27

The smartphone stores phone numbers, appointments, addresses, photographs, messages, passwords, and reminders that once depended on our memory or on several separate tools. Over time, the phone stopped being just a communication device and became a permanent extension of our memory. This episode explores cognitive offloading, the benefits of outsourcing everyday information, and how that convenience changes what we choose to remember. Now that artificial intelligence can also organize and retrieve our personal information, a new question emerges: which things do we still want to remember for ourselves?

  • The Internet and the Battle for Our Attention
    2026/08/27

The internet dramatically expanded our access to information, people, and experiences, but it also created an environment where countless stimuli compete for our attention. Notifications, links, recommendations, and endless feeds have changed the way we read, search, and focus. This episode explores how attention became one of the most contested resources of the digital age and what may happen as artificial intelligence increasingly filters, summarizes, and selects information for us. The question is no longer simply how much we can know, but who decides what deserves our attention.
