  • Episode 8: Heidi's Unpopular Book
    2017/05/18
Heidi Thompson has released a book all about being unpopular! Check out the website and grab the book here or get it straight from Amazon! Auto-generated Transcript [00:00:00] Welcome to the unpopular podcast Josh with us here. Your host. And today's episode is about someone that is running an unpopular business but also they help people walk down that path towards unpopularity that is building a niche business. This is so of the wedding industry. But I hope it applies to people outside of as well as the unpopular podcast the whole unpopular deal. It's not just about wedding industry people it's about everyone building a missional business. So in this building their business hopefully business be sustainable excitable. And so I thought that today's guests could just introduce herself. [37.5] [00:00:37] I'm Harry Thompson and I hope wedding professionals grow their businesses without going crazy in the past US going crazy. [8.1] [00:00:46] The fun part. Like why. What all the psychologist going to do when we put them out of work. That's terrible. I feel sorry for the psychologists. [12.4] [00:00:59] Well what what led you into you into helping what business businesses like what is your what is your Genesis What does your Wikipedia page look like. [6.1] [00:01:06] So it all pretty much started when if you want to go way back on I was in college I were working on events fundraising events for the last time for nonprofits. And I loved it and I loved everything about the events the marketing of them because I was involved in both. [17.8] [00:01:25] And that led me to you know different jobs in the non-profit world but also branching out into the wedding world where I worked as an assistant to a wedding planner and I have all the respect in the world for wedding planners. [13.8] [00:01:39] It's too high stress for me. I'm not my thang by I always really loved the wedding and the service that was a really interesting creative industry. So. [12.2] [00:01:52] I go about my life I'm living in England and working in different marketing jobs. [7.3] [00:02:00] And I notice there is this gap in the market in the U.K. where what's coming out of the wedding media it's very fluffy in Fairy Town. But that was the exact opposite of what I saw most of the market going out there. So I created an alternative wedding fare to bring the quirky non-traditional couples together with quirky traditional vendors. And that was where. A smattering in the face that not everybody reads marketing books cause they're fine in that I could actually help these exhibitors that I was spending my time coaching to make sure they got more out of the event where during their marketing and their businesses in a broader way the wedding industry is such a beautiful unique one and I'm sure there's other industries that are like this. [57.5] [00:02:58] But but what I've found so just captivating about the winning industry is that you've somehow got all of these solar panels these these solar operators and maybe say maybe it's a husband wife maybe it's a solo with one or two staff but all these very small micro businesses that are so heavily driven by a passion like you cannot operate in the wedding industry. If you are just if you are pure capitalistic money driven by your you you just don't roll and then we need this very secret these really small market businesses with these really passionate really creative people and they are just giving it all they've got and their clients are also equally passionate like there's not many impassionate brides and grooms but most people are. Well actually I want to say every single person is planning the best wedding ever. And so there's these mixes of passions and excitement and. [57.9] [00:03:57] And what is severely lacking is some business acumen and I suppose you've you've really identified that you and I...

You see there's a free blog unpopular. This I see there's this free podcast and also also the members only blog which is available unpopular education anaphylaxis Alec was on the air is about accepting cash as a way of payment. A final personal pain. There's new better ways. Also why close down the Facebook group. That's right. The unpopular Facebook group did a slack thing is still happening or just no group like that I have no group but a big one that over in this week is about how to download images to share for your Instagram with our screen shot and screen shotting is straight from the mouth of the devil. And you just need to do that anymore. This week's episode is worth all the noise. According a cafe in Brisbane iconic coffee awesome location quiet but not quite enough. James Cridland is the guest. And we'll let him explain to you what he does. James Cridland: [00:01:07] When I say I say radio futurologist and they look at me and they laugh and they say what's that. Southern Cross austereo Fairfax Media a couple of community stations. James has been doing it almost forever. Enjoy. James Cridland: [00:02:04] So this is my 20 something ninth year in radio. And I've done and I worked in lots of different bits of radio. But now I'm mostly working in the interesting bits in terms of you know new platforms. Digital radio Internet outcasting. Yeah. And also you know. And also really helping companies understand where things are. Things are changing just as in any business the way that we consume radio is changing the way that we do the radio and it's money is is changing you know so I help. Radio stations and other. And other folk understand how to make my stuff. [00:02:48] I want to talk about the business of being a future all of us which is a person that may not have been written you know soon but can we just start on radio because I'm on XM Radio which is sort of like a dirty word. But I still love either a dirty word or a very sensible word who pay my bills. I can press you through your e-mail. [00:03:14] Is that was I going to get to it. But I appreciate your passion for things Radio and also. Would you agree that the word radio is it. Is it diminishing or is it expanding too. • Episode 4: An Unpopular Cup Of Tea (Smith)
    2017/02/19
Tea and I challenge each other constantly in the spheres of advertising, marketing and DIY business technology. Ultimately, she always wins, but the fight is the main reason I'm here. Enjoy! Auto-generated Transcript Josh Withers: [00:00:00] This is the popular podcast Josh with us here. And joining me today is perthes A very own Tea Smith from Kintsugi. I was really quiet with the pronunciation. Yes. Tell us who Kintsugi is and who you are. Tea Smith: [00:00:16] Old brand new brand. So still it's been a few years but certainly Agency is something that's actually funny story I registered the domain six years ago. The name Reddit resonated with me. I sat on it going that's going to be something one day. And because of the interstate and some licencing issues and stuff I couldn't use the agency name that I moved across with. So I went oh I need a new name and Kintsugi appears. And it's actually become quite great it's about you could edit this out. It's about the concept you can see is broken pottery that they meld together with gold and it becomes a new unique piece. And I think that metaphore applies very much to what I do in marketing. I often inherit from happening and in broken stuff and you know not to be naff about it but to you know meld it with gold and fix it and make something new and unique There's really everything together. Josh Withers: [00:01:14] There's an old adage that the convert is much more passionate than believer. Yes. And whether this is religion or sport or whatever the brand. And so is there an essence of an apologize for a kitchen in the background when we're recording in Brisbane. There are so friends that are serving I'm making a whole lot more. But is there is there is an element of you like you don't really deal with fresh freshets kind of you can do with people you like. Everything I've done is terrible. Let me help you. Tea Smith: [00:01:50] Yeah I think in 2017 unless you you know to coin a phrase Fresh Off The Boat into marketing and you're in your to you know your first business. I think most people have been burned. I think most people have had some bad experiences and good experiences with digital marketing. I think there's a bit of a backlash occurring around you know the new social media shiny things they're finding that people you know people are finding that they're overstretched that they're struggling to do stuff. You know the novelty has very much worn off and people are trying to see the actual business value for their activity over the years. I you know I've obviously worked from you know so it was a micro right up to now enterprise. Tea Smith: [00:02:28] I've got some rather large global clients now. Josh Withers: [00:02:31] Is that kind of where you sit like although I don't know I checked anyone but you got to sit in the enterprise space. Tea Smith: [00:02:36] I don't reject people but I do filter. So for me I'm very much about. I really like to rally around a problem. I find it very very hard to sit in a traditional agency pitch because for me a lot of it is you know once you're out it's like a date. You know you kind of sitting there awkwardly trying to guess what the other person wants rather than actually rolling up your sleeves and rallying around a problem and trying to find a strategy and a way out of that problem. So for me I've sort of carved a nation where. I will sit down and consult with somebody around the problem not make you know again you know a lot of people have made promises over the years. People are Agency fatigued. They're kind of sick of the sort of hipster promise and the non-delivery and all of those very heavy artillery to a Facebook page and a viral video. Yeah. Yeah like I like the buzz and get your you know it doesn't influence a marketing and have you heard of the Kurdish youth club and you know...

  • Episode 3: An Unpopular Day, James Day
    2017/02/13

James Day is a good friend of mine, who also happens to be one of the leading wedding photographers in the world. I've helped him with lots of business automation and customer journey before today, so before I left his house this morning I had to record a podcast with him! In this episode we talk about sample wedding albums that you leave with wedding vendors and venues, and also automating the photo album process using Gravity Forms and Zapier. Transcript [00:00:00] Hello I'm Josh Withers. This is the unpopular podcast. It's a podcast from the unpopular community and you could find this podcast already at [00:00:07] unpopular.show [1.1] unpopular.com.au is the membership blog. And there's a free blog at unpopularity. The idea with this is that we have a church to business people that are friends of mine. We have a chat about their business and how we can lubricate things and make things a little bit better. This is episode three, episode one and two are both from wedding industry people and also from males. And I do want to try and get some diversity happening. That is happening but I haven't received a James' house and so like this would be a waste of opportunity. [00:00:35] James hello. Hello there to you James day. Wedding Photographer I live near Sydney by the beach which is where we are right now. [00:00:46] It's the most Australian thing, Sydney by the beach. Can you see the opera house from your house? Almost. [00:00:54] I'm really glad we can't. I'm very glad that I'm not that close to Sydney. [00:00:58] Yeah. Well could you get to the beach at Bulli. It's just one bloke with the dog and it's probably a good bloke right James. But what do you give him an insight into you and what you do like like what makes you unpopular. [00:01:16] So many things make me. Well I I think the main thing I do is I photograph weddings as I said before. That's been sort of my one and only big career. That's that's all I've ever done I've had a little little. Flirts with other things before I got started as a photographer. [00:01:36] What's the what's the furtherest flirt from wedding photographer like like where you're a stripper at some point or works in the gym as a personal trainer really. [00:01:46] Once upon a time I was super fit I'm just super fat. [00:01:51] Yes so my friend James is a personal trainer you should talk to him about recent tips and stuff. [00:01:58] Yeah a lot has changed since then. But yeah so I think I've probably photographed in the realms of 600 weddings I've been to lots and lots of crazy parties going crazy and the radio show on Saturday though that was like mind blowing me crazy and I'm in love. [00:02:14] I love being part of ridiculously nuts wedding celebrations. So when people would just go there. We're here to celebrate mass. Let's go all out. [00:02:24] So I like that. [00:02:28] I think some people the whole unpopular philosophy is that you don't have to be everyone's insert business name like everyone's photographer everyone's whatever but you can kind of go niche and you can try and figure out what makes you new. And so how do you kind of identify that like in a line up of like up in Sydney. I'm guessing there's at least a thousand one hundred dollars. I don't know. [00:02:53] Like I'm just saying at the moment that any research but I'm sure there's a lot I think there's probably a thousand people who are wedding photographer. To have a point so. [00:03:03] So they. Because the whole popular thing is that there's a massive amount of people. How do you make how do you know militia. Well how do you kind of describe it. [00:03:13] Well firstly it's taken me a while to work this out with America from country Ahmed out where I found that a lot of the people that were just booking me...
