Onesimus was a domestic slave who belonged to Philemon, a wealthy man and a member of the church in Colosse. Onesimus had run away from Philemon and had made his way to Rome, where he met Paul, who apparently led him to Christ. Paul is asking Philemon for an incredibly generous gesture. As for us? Well, we don’t want to lose friends or family, so it’s more comfortable to shrug our shoulders and just go along. But that is not what God wants, he didn’t want that from Jeremiah and He doesn’t want that from us.
