  • BLACK DEATHS IN CUSTODY: The Arts and Crimes of Gordon Syron
    2025/06/17

What happens when a notorious past collides with a legacy of cultural defiance? This week on "Murders Close to Me," I share a story that hits incredibly close to home: the life of Gordon Syron, my grandmother's former partner, and one of Australia's most significant Aboriginal artists. Born in 1941, Gordon's path took a dramatic turn in 1972 with a murder conviction linked to an intense family land dispute – a case that became a powerful symbol of injustice with an all-white jury denying him fair representation.

You'll hear about his decade in the brutal Long Bay Gaol, where he unexpectedly transformed, teaching himself to paint and forging a powerful artistic voice. From his iconic "Judgment by His Peers" to his tireless work as an activist and educator, Gordon used his art as a fierce weapon against terra nullius and systemic racism.

  • MURDER IN BALMAIN: The Unsolved Case of Pauline Gillard
    2025/06/08

This is a story that has stayed with me for nearly three decades. It's a story about a place I know well, a seemingly peaceful corner of Sydney called Balmain. But on a quiet September evening in 1997, that peace was shattered by a shocking crime – the murder of Pauline Gillard.

Pauline wasn't just a name in the headlines for me. She was my grandmother's best friend. I remember visiting her home, the kindness in her eyes, the laughter in her voice. Just days before her death, I was there, a teenager enjoying a simple afternoon, completely unaware of the tragedy that was about to unfold.

This isn't just a recounting of a cold case. This is personal. Join me as we delve into the details of Pauline's murder, the initial investigation that yielded no answers, and the unsettling revelations of the coronial inquest – a process that pointed to a possible motive and even a suspect, yet ultimately left the mystery unsolved.

We'll hear about the unwavering determination of Pauline's daughter, Karen, whose powerful words for people to go home to hug their mothers and her fight for justice will stay with you. And I'll share my own memories of Pauline and the chilling realization that the danger surrounding her murder might have unknowingly touched my own life.

This is the story of a quiet life violently ended, a community left in shock, and a family's enduring search for truth. This is the haunting of Balmain. Stay with us.

  • BONUS EPISODE: Unsolved case Of Pauline Gillard❤️‍🩹
    2025/06/08

Bonus information on the 1997 murder of Pauline Gillard

We've talked about the investigation, the inquest, the chilling possibility of mistaken identity. But there's something else, a detail that makes the idea of a mix-up even more disturbing. And that detail lies in the physical descriptions of Pauline and Maria.

Pauline Gillard was a short, curvy woman with blonde hair. Maria, her former daughter in law, was a slender size eight, with olive skin and long, dark hair. The idea that a hitman, allegedly Joe Agostino, could have mistaken these two women is almost unbelievable. The physical differences are stark.

Think about it. Pauline, a loving grandmother, playing a handheld computer game in her bedroom on that fateful evening of September 18, 1997. Six gunshots, close range. A life extinguished. And the theory is, it wasn't even meant for her.

We know from the inquest that Neal Gioa WANTED CUSTODY OF HIS DAUGHTER AND CUSTODY OF HIS DAUGHTER !

But again, the physical differences between Pauline and Maria make this "mistake" so hard to fathom. How could someone, hired to kill, get it so wrong? It adds another layer of darkness to this already tragic story #truecrime #paulinegillard #murder #sydney
