The latest episode in our fun and laid-back podcast is Part 1 of our amazing chat with veteran actor Tony Bonner, AM. We chatted with Tony about working at Pinewood Studios with Roger Moore, turning down his opportunity to play James Bond, his struggles with success and failure, playing a part in so many iconic films such as The Man from Snowy River, sharing a caravan with Paul Hogan, and so much more.
Tony came from a theatrical background. His father was a leading musical actor and his mother a concert soprano. He started singing/dancing classes and auditioning. His film and TV career started in the early 60s. In the 70s, he returned to Australia where he still plays the lead in both mediums. Tony received an Order of Australia Medal (AM) for services to the arts and gained a lifetime achievement award at the Warner Brothers Studio on the Gold Coast in 2016.
His notable film roles include Eyewitness (1970), You Can't Win 'Em All (1970), Creatures the World Forgot (1971), Inn of the Damned (1975), The Mango Tree (1977), Money Movers (1978), The Man from Snowy River (1982), The Highest Honor (1983), Quigley Down Under (1990), Dead Sleep (1990), Hurricane Smith (1992), and Liquid Bridge (2003). He has twice portrayed Australian World War I soldier Murray Bourchier, to whom he bears a remarkable likeness, in the 1987 film The Lighthorsemen and a 1993 episode of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (which also used footage from The Lighthorsemen).
Tony currently resides in Sydney, and has been the president of the Manly Surf Lifesaving Club, he also teaches acting classes in his spare time.
He was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division in the 2017 Australia Day honors for significant service to the performing arts as an actor, to surf lifesaving, and to the community through charitable organizations.
