  • Can You Stand The Rain?

    Can You Stand the Rain?

Everybody loves the sunshine version of a Black woman—the accomplished woman, the smiling woman, the agreeable woman, the woman whose brilliance asks nothing uncomfortable of the people around her. But what happens when the weather changes? What happens when she is under pressure, fighting for her dignity, naming harm, and refusing to shrink?

In this episode of This Is My Syncopated Life, Dr. Patrice M. Charles examines the classic question, Can you stand the rain?, through the lens of Black Feminist Thought. This is not simply a conversation about romantic love. It is about witness, loyalty, psychological safety, and the difference between loving a Black woman and merely enjoying her when she is easy to consume.

Can you stand beside her without policing her tone? Can you hear her without translating her experience into something more comfortable? Can you resist asking her to change her perspective when her clarity exposes what others would rather leave hidden?

Because sunny days reveal who enjoys your presence.

The rain reveals who can stand beside your truth.

And sometimes, Beloved, they never loved the woman.

    They loved the weather.

  • Our Lives Live in the ZigZag
    2026/07/06

In this opening episode of Season 4, we explore revelation, healing, and the beautiful complexity of becoming. “Our Lives Live in the Zigzag” invites listeners to rethink the idea that life must unfold in a straight line. For Black women especially, our power often lives in the unexpected turns, the detours, the pauses, the losses, and the moments that force us to see ourselves more clearly.

This episode sets the tone for a season rooted in truth-telling, reflection, resilience, and transformation. Through personal stories and hard-earned wisdom, Dr. Charles opens a space for Black women to honor the non-linear paths that shaped them—and to recognize that the zigzag was never failure. It was formation.

  • People eat at the level of their vision
    2026/06/09

What happens when you stop asking whether you belong and start asking who created the measuring stick?

In this birthday episode of This Is My Syncopated Life, Dr. Charles takes listeners through stories about performance evaluations, perspective shifts, Black Feminist Thought, invisible standards, good china, identity, visibility, and why some people insist on measuring giraffes using turtle rulers.

From academia to athletics, workplace culture to personal growth, this episode explores what happens when we begin questioning the assumptions we have accepted as truth—and what happens when we stop disqualifying ourselves before understanding the rules of the game.

This episode is not about having all the answers.

It is about asking better questions.

Because maybe the issue was never whether you belonged.

    Maybe the question was:

    By whose standards?

    Welcome to Chapter 61.
