What happens when a Black woman refuses to become what poverty, family, gender, and other people’s expectations say she should be?

In this deeply personal episode of This Is My Syncopated Life, Dr. Charles revisits the life of her mother, Silvia Teresa Coulson—a stunningly beautiful, complicated, ambitious woman whose poverty became something family members repeatedly used to explain who they believed she was supposed to be. Through family fragments, childhood memories, humor, and the clarifying lens of Black Feminist Thought, Dr. Charles asks a different question: Who was Silvia not to believe she was grand?

This is not an attempt to make a difficult mother perfect. It is an examination of how Black women can be sexualized, expected to accommodate, denied protection, blamed for wanting more, and ultimately reduced to the defenses they developed while surviving what happened to them. It is also the story of a daughter who could challenge her mother, dislike her sometimes, refuse her manipulation—and still defend her dignity without hesitation.

Because poverty was something Betty experienced. It was never who Betty was. And before we assign blame to a Black woman for who she became, perhaps we ought to confirm the unit of analysis.
