זֶה לְשׁוֹן הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק בְּאֶחָד מִדְּרוּשָׁיו

The following are the words of Tzemach Tzedek in one of his maamarim:

רַבֵּנוּ ז"ל בְּאִמְרוֹתָיו לְבָנָיו יוֹם ג' פָּרָשַׁת בָּלָק שְׁנַת תּקס"ב אָמַר וְזֶה דְּבָרָיו

The [Alter] Rebbe, when speaking with his sons on the Tuesday of Parshas Balak, 5562 (1802), said the following:

לְהָבִין קוּשְׁיַת הַתּוֹכְנִים

“The astronomers ask,

מֵאַחַר שֶׁהָאָרֶץ הִיא כַּדּוּרִית וַעֲגוּלָה כְּתַפּוּחַ

that since the earth is spherical like an apple,

לָמָה אֵינָם נוֹפְלִים אוֹתָם בְּנֵי אָדָם הַדָּרִים כְּנֶגְדֵנוּ מִלְמַטָּה בְּאַמעֶרִיקאָ

why don’t the people living opposite us — down below, in America — fall off?...

וְתֵּרוּצָם אֵינוֹ אֱמֶת

Their resolution is incorrect….”

וְרַבֵּנוּ ז"ל אָמַר כִּי הַתֵּרוּץ הוּא

The [Alter] Rebbe stated that the solution is [as follows]:

דְּהִנֵּה מְבוּאָר בְּעֵץ חַיִּים שֶׁהַתִּשְׁעָה גַּלְגַלִים מְקַבְּלִים מִבְּחִינַת עִגּוּלִים

“It is explained in Etz Chayim that the nine heavenly orbs receive [their vitality] from the [spiritual rung] described as iggulim, “spheres.”

וּבְהָעִגּוּל אֵין בּוֹ מַעְלָה וּמַטָּה

Now, a sphere has neither top nor bottom.

וּמֵהַאי טַעְמָא הִנֵּה אוֹתָם בְּנֵי אָדָם שֶׁהֵם כְּנֶגְדֵנוּ לְמַטָּה

Thus the people who are opposite us, down below,

הֲרֵי הָרָקִיעַ שֶׁעֲלֵיהֶם הוּא לְמַעְלָה בְּהַשְׁוָאָה אַחַת עִם הָרָקִיעַ שֶׁעָלֵינוּ

the sky above them, is above exactly as the sky here is above us.

וְהָאָרֶץ דְּשָׁם הִיא מַטָּה לְגַבֵּי הָרָקִיעַ שֶׁעָלֶיהָ

And the earth there is below, relative to the sky that is above it.”

אֵין אוֹמְרִים תַּחֲנוּן

Tachanun is not recited.

יוֹם בּוֹ יָצָא כְּבוֹד קְדוּשַׁת אַדְמוּ"ר שליט"א לְחֵרוּת

On this date [in 1927], the Rebbe [Rayatz]was actually granted freedom.

הַמַּאֲסָר הוּתְחַל רֶבַע עַל שָׁעָה הַשְּׁלִישִׁית אוֹר לְיוֹם רְבִיעִי חֲמִשָׁה עָשָׂר בְּסִיוָן תרפ"ז

[His] imprisonment began at 2:15 on Wednesday morning, the fifteenth of Sivan, 5687 (1927).

הִתְעַכֵּב בְּגָלוּת — בְּעִיר קאַסְטראַמאַ

He remained in exile, in Kostrama,

עַד חֲצִי שָׁעָה אַחַר חֲצוֹת הַיּוֹם יוֹם רְבִיעִי שְׁלֹשָׁה עָשָׂר בְּתַּמוּז תּרפ"ז

until 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the thirteenth of Tammuz, 5687 (1927).

מִמִּכְתָּב כְּבוֹד קְדוּשַׁת אַדְמוּ"ר שׁליט"א לְחַג הַגְּאוּלָה

The following is an excerpt from a letter of the Rebbe [Rayatz] in anticipation of [the fifth anniversary of] the Festival of Liberation:

הִנְנִי שׁוֹלֵחַ מַאֲמָר... הִשְׁתַּתְּפוּתִי עִם יְדִידֵינוּ אַנְשֵׁי שְׁלוֹמֵינוּ שֶׁיִּחְיוּ בְּכָל מְקוֹם מוֹשְׁבוֹתֵיכֶם לְהַצְלָחָה

“I am enclosing a maamar…. In this way I am participating with our friends, the men of the chassidic brotherhood (May you all prosper, wherever you live!),

וְלִהְיוֹת אִתְּכֶם עִמָכֶם בְּהִתְוַעֲדוּתְכֶם

and am together with you at the farbrengens

בִּדְבַר חִזוּק דַּרְכֵי הַחֲסִידוּת בִּקְבִיעוּת וּשְׁמִירַת זְמַנֵי לִמּוּדֵי דִּבְרֵי אֱלֹקִים חַיִּים

at which you strive to strengthen the spiritual lifestyle of Chassidus — by setting aside and observing fixed times for the study of the teachings of Chassidus,

וּלְהִתְעוֹרֵר בְּקִיוּם עִנְיָנֵי הַלִּמּוּד

with the aim of being aroused to actualize the ideals discussed there….

אֱלֹקֵינוּ וֵאלֹקֵי אֲבוֹתֵינוּ יְבָרֵךְ אֶת כְּלָלוּת אַנְשֵׁי שְׁלוֹמֵינוּ

“May our G‑d and the G‑d of our fathers bless the entire chassidic brotherhood —

הֵם בֵּיתָם זַרְעָם וְזֶרַע זַרְעָם בְּתוֹךְ כְּלַל אֲחֵינוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל

themselves, their wives, their children and their grandchildren — together with all our brothers of the House of Israel.

הַשֵּׁם עֲלֵיהֶם יִחְיוּ, בְּכָל מִילֵי דְמֵיטַב מִנֶפֶשׁ וְעַד בָּשָׂר

May G‑d be with you all, and bestow upon you all manner of blessings both spiritual and material.”

יוֹם הוּלֶּדֶת אֶת כְּבוֹד קְדוּשַׁת אַדְמוּ"ר שְׁלִיטָ"א בִּשְׁנַת תּר"ם

[This date marks] the birthday of the Rebbe Rayatz in 5640 (1880).

יוֹם בּוֹ נִתְבַּשֵּׂר — בִּשְׁנַת תּרפ"ז — שֶׁהוּא חָפְשִׁי מִגָּלוּתוֹ אֲשֶׁר הָגְלָה

On this date, in 5687 (1927), he was informed of his impending release from the exile

אַחֲרֵי שֶׁהָיָה תָּפוּס בְּמַאֲסָר — עַל עֲבוֹדָתוֹ בְּחִזוּק הַתּוֹרָה וְהַיַּהֲדוּת

that followed his imprisonment, which came in the wake of his efforts to buttress the study and observance of the Torah.

מִמִּכְתַּב כְּבוֹד קְדוּשַּׁת אַדְמוּ"ר שְׁלִיטָ"א

From a letter of the Rebbe [Rayatz]:

בִּשְׁנֵי יְמֵי הַגְּאוּלָה י"ב וי"ג תַּמּוּז הַבָּאִים עָלֵינוּ לְטוֹבָה

On the two days of redemption — the twelfth and the thirteenth of Tammuz (May they arrive favorably!) —

יִתְוַעֲדוּ אַנְשֵׁי שְׁלוֹמֵינוּ, לְטוֹבָה וְלִבְרָכָה בְּגַשְׁמִיּוּת וּבְרוּחָנִיּוּת

the members of the chassidic brotherhood should participate in a farbrengen, for their material and spiritual benefit,

כַּאֲשֶׁר הוּקְבַּע מֵאֵת אָבִינוּ הָרִאשׁוֹן הוֹד כְּבוֹד קְדוּשַּׁת אַאַזְמוּ"ר רַבֵּנוּ הַזָּקֵן

in the manner instituted by our first forefather, the Alter Rebbe.

זֵכֶר צַדִּיק וְקָדוֹשׁ לִבְרָכָה לְחַיֵּי הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא, נִשְׁמָתוֹ בְּגִנְזֵי מְרוֹמִים, זְכוּתוֹ יָגֵן עָלֵינוּ

The memory of the righteous and holy is a blessing for the life of the world to come, his soul is in the treasuries of the heavens, his merit will protect us.

בְּהִתְוַעֲדוּת זוּ יְדַבְּרוּ אַנְשֵׁי שְׁלוֹמֵינוּ שֶׁיִחְיוּ אִישׁ אֶת רֵעֵהוּ בְּשֶׁבֶת אַחִים

At this farbrengen they should encourage each other, fraternally,

בְּחִזוּק קְבִיעוּת שִׁעוּרֵי הַלִּמוּד

to fix times for [Torah] study sessions.

וְהִנְנִי שׁוֹלֵחַ לָהֶם אֶת בִּרְכָתִי כִּי יִשָּׂא הַשֵּׁם פָּנָיו אֲלֵיהֶם בְּגַשְׁמִיוּת וְרוּחָנִיוּת

And I send you my blessing that G‑d “turn His countenance to you” in both material and spiritual matters.
