In August 1981, a family home in Bournemouth, England became the centre of a short but intense poltergeist case involving moving furniture, flying household objects and repeated disturbances witnessed not only by the family, but by neighbours, police officers and a retired clergyman. The case later drew in mediums, newspaper reporters and psychical researcher Cyril Permutt, yet the activity stopped almost as suddenly as it had begun.

For generations, people in rural Thailand have told stories of the Krasue, a woman whose head leaves her body after dark with her internal organs hanging beneath it as she travels in search of blood, carrion and filth. Strange red, green and orange lights seen moving above fields have repeatedly been linked to the creature, and remarkably, alleged sightings continue today, with reports from Ratchaburi and Lopburi in 2023, Surin and Buriram in 2024, and Phetchabun as recently as February 2026.

In this special episode, I'm joined by writer and screenwriter Thom Burgess for a chat about ghost stories, folklore and a lifelong fascination with the supernatural.

Thom talks about growing up surrounded by the ghostlore of Kent, from the phantom bride of Bluebell Hill to the stories that first frightened and fascinated him as a child, and how that interest eventually found its way into his own writing and the Paramount horror film Passenger.

Along the way, we get into M. R. James, haunted pubs, phantom hitchhikers, the strange ways folklore has moved online and, inevitably, those deeply unsettling Cat in the Hat videos. Thom also shares a couple of his own unexplained experiences, including a very strange night in a Seattle hotel.

We also talk about City of Ghosts: The Canterbury Ghost Story Festival, taking place in Canterbury on 3 October, which brings together more than 300 years of ghost stories, folklore, literature, film and the supernatural.

In 1892, a farm worker near Salem, Oregon, returned to a cultivated field after supper and claimed to encounter a pale woman standing beside his plough. When he tried to strike her, the blows passed straight through her, and she chased him across the field towards the farmhouse. Locals connected the apparition to an older story of a pioneer woman whose grave had once been avoided by ploughmen before its location was forgotten and crops began growing over the place where she lay.

In 1710, strange disturbances began inside Knowehead House on the Islandmagee peninsula in County Antrim. Stones appeared from nowhere, bedclothes were arranged into the shape of corpses, and a ragged childlike figure was seen moving through the house before apparently predicting the death of its elderly resident, Ann Haltridge. After Ann died, eighteen-year-old Mary Dunbar arrived and soon began suffering violent fits, claiming invisible women were attacking her and producing pins, feathers and other objects from her mouth. Her accusations eventually sent eight women to prison for witchcraft and drew a ninth person into a case that became Ireland’s last major witch trial.
