Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are widely prescribed medications, with millions of people worldwide taking them regularly. In the United States alone, it's estimated that tens of millions of individuals use PPIs each year to manage various gastrointestinal conditions, primarily gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and related disorders.

Proton pump inhibitors are generally considered safe and effective when used for less than 8 weeks, but many people will stay on a PPI long term because stopping abruptly can lead to rebound acid reflux.

In today's episode, we will explore the risks of long term PPI use and alternative methods for managing acid reflux when appropriate.

Welcome to The Uncensored Pharmacists, where we’re rewriting the prescription for health, one candid conversation at a time. Join us as we delve into the holistic world of well-being, covering everything from the latest pharmacy insights to navigating health regulations and championing patient advocacy.

Are you ready to discover the truth about your medicine? Then you’re in the right place. Let’s embark on this journey for a healthier, more informed you, together.

Statins are among the most prescribed medications in the world. They work by decreasing the production of cholesterol in the liver, but they are also prescribed to help reduce the risk of cardiovascular events like strokes and heart attacks in some people.

Unfortunately, statins can increase risk for other health issues like diabetes and can cause liver damage. Opponents of statins argue that statins may increase risk of dementia while proponents say the opposite.

On today’s episode, we will discuss the risks and benefits of statins and what lifestyle changes anyone with high cholesterol or an increased risk of cardiovascular disease should be making to live a longer, healthier life.

  • 3: Factors Affecting Prescribing In USA
    2024/03/19
Welcome to The Uncensored Pharmacists, where we’re rewriting the prescription for health, one candid conversation at a time. Join us as we delve into the holistic world of well-being, covering everything from the latest pharmacy insights to navigating health regulations and championing patient advocacy.

Are you ready to discover the truth about your medicine? Then you’re in the right place. Let’s embark on this journey for a healthier, more informed you, together.

On our last episode, we talked about direct to consumer advertising of pharmaceutical products in America, but this is just one factor that impacts prescribing practices in America.

The United States lags behind many peer countries in various health outcomes, including life expectancy, infant mortality, and chronic disease prevalence.

The United States spends significantly more on healthcare than peer countries, both per capita and as a percentage of GDP. Despite this higher expenditure, healthcare outcomes in the U.S. do not outperform those of peer countries.

On today’s episode, we will explore medication prescribing practices in America and how those practices are impacting the health of Americans.

Are you ready to discover the truth about your medicine? Then you’re in the right place. Let’s embark on this journey for a healthier, more informed you, together.

Direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA) refers to marketing efforts by pharmaceutical companies aimed directly at consumers, promoting prescription medications through various channels such as television, print media, and online platforms.

While the United States and New Zealand are the only two countries that permit DTCA of prescription medications.

Proponents of DTCA say it raises awareness about treatment options, encouraging patient-doctor discussions, and potentially destigmatizing certain health conditions. However, critics argue that DTCA can lead to overprescribing, medicalization of normal conditions, and skewed perceptions of drug efficacy and safety.

On today’s episode, we will dive into the world of DTCA and will have you questioning, “Should I really ask my doctor about that medication or not?”
