  • Walking on the Sea of Galilee and Standing Up to Injustice
    2026/08/06
Matthew 14:22-33 Jesus’ act of walking on the water carries more than mere theological significance. It also communicated profound political and social meaning to Jesus followers in the time it was written. Under the rule of Herod Antipas, the Sea of Galilee had become the center of an exploitative fishing economy. Antipas established the city of Tiberias on its western shore and local fishermen, including several of Jesus’ disciples, lived under heavy economic burdens created by this political system. Against this backdrop, Jesus’ mastery over the waters symbolizes liberating authority over a realm that Herod claimed to control and a lake that was at the center of Herod’s exploitative plan. • Justice Lessons from the Feeding of the Five Thousand
    2026/07/30
Matthew 14:13-21 Faithful engagement in justice requires balancing action with recovery. Those who advocate for the poor, challenge injustice, or comfort victims of violence also need spaces for prayer, mourning, contemplation, and renewal. Our story this week shows that grief over injustice and setbacks can deepen rather than diminish our commitment to compassionate service. Also, our reading shows that justice begins with community and sharing what we have, organizing communities around human dignity, and ensuring that resources are distributed so that no one is left hungry. In Jesus’ vision of a just future, compassion is expressed not only in charity but in also creating communities where all people can flourish together and charity itself becomes obsolete. • Parables of Justice, Compassion, and Inclusion
    2026/07/23
Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52 These parables represent the wisdom of communities gone before us, while encouraging fresh understanding that we can bring to our world now: to apply the principles of the gospels in ways that promote justice, mercy, and inclusion today. We can courageously address contemporary forms of injustice such as poverty, racism, misogyny, discrimination, environmental degradation, economic inequality, LGBTQ bigotry, and more. We can allow Jesus’ teachings to continue to inspire new responses to human suffering and social challenges. We are entrusted with using wisdom we have inherited and the wisdom in marginalized and vulnerable communities to build communities marked by compassion, equality, and peace. Jesus teaches that authentic discipleship combines respect for the wisdom of the past and honesty about where those in the past got it wrong. With openness to transformation, every generation pursuing justice can remain rooted in the enduring values we’ve learned from the Jesus story while participating in new expressions of compassion and justice, today.
