  • Season 2 Episode 13 | The Science of Exposure in Environmental Health and Equity | Dr. Nicolas Lopez-Galvez, San Diego State University
    2026/10/13
In this episode of “The Science Of,” the students are joined by environmental health researcher Dr. Nicolas Lopez-Galvez, an assistant professor at San Diego State University and member of the UCSD Moores Cancer Center’s Cancer Control Program. Dr. Lopez-Galvez discusses how environmental exposures—from tobacco smoke to pesticides—may affect health across the lifespan, especially in vulnerable and border communities, and why strong community partnerships and clear science communication matter.Guest BackgroundNico described his path from Ecuador through biology, public health, and environmental exposure research. His work focuses on vulnerable populations, including farm workers and border communities.Carcinogens And ExposureDiscussion covered carcinogens, smoking, glyphosate, PFAS, pesticides, plastics, and chemical substitution.Nico explained that determining carcinogenicity can require decades of research and that exposure effects depend on dose, timing, and duration.Prenatal, childhood, and other critical exposure windows were discussed, along with animal models used when human experiments are not possible.Environmental JusticeBorder-region policy can overlook community realities and cross-border healthcare use.Imperial Valley cancer data may miss residents who obtain screening or treatment in Mexico.Community-based research should involve residents in defining questions and collecting data.Research And CommunicationNico discussed research linking previous tobacco use in homes with heavy metals, including lead.Scientists should present findings directly through public forums, explain correlation versus causation, and communicate caveats.Future And PreventionPersonal steps discussed included reducing plastic use, limiting red meat, and making small environmental changes.Nico emphasized that broader prevention depends on policy, renewable-energy investment, stronger environmental protections, and community engagement.Students interested in STEM were encouraged to contact researchers and seek early laboratory or field experience."The Science Of" is a student-produced podcast. • Season 2 Episode 12 | The Science of Oncofertility and Reproductive Health | Dr. Irene Su, UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center
    2026/10/06
In this episode of “The Science Of,” the students are joined by reproductive endocrinologist and fertility specialist Dr. Irene Su of UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. Dr. Su explains how oncofertility helps young cancer patients understand and protect their reproductive health, and discusses research, community partnerships, and telehealth approaches aimed at making fertility care more accessible and equitable.Guest BackgroundIrene discussed her Taiwanese American background, nationwide education and training, and transition from East Asian Studies to medicine. She credited her family and her mother’s principle of choosing options that preserve the most future choices.Oncofertility CareCancer treatments can preserve life while harming fertility and reproductive function.Patients need clear counseling, screening, specialist referral, and survivorship support.Telehealth and community partnerships can reduce travel and access barriers.Research and InnovationAt-home AMH testing helped identify post-treatment reproductive opportunities.Future research may use whole-ovary freezing models, stem-cell-derived gametes, shared datasets, AI, and machine learning to improve risk prediction and access.Community PilotThe Create Partnership connected UC San Diego, SDSU, and the Cancer Resource Center of the Desert. The pilot used culturally and linguistically adapted English and Spanish resources, local screening, and virtual specialist care.Insurance PolicyFertility-preservation mandates vary by state and may exclude Medicaid patients or omit essential services.Inconsistent implementation and high cost-sharing continue to limit access.Research-to-practice efforts should pair clinical evidence with advocacy channels and constituent-focused policy messaging.Future VisionIrene expects advances in ovarian preservation, stem-cell biology, and implementation science to expand equitable reproductive care."The Science Of" is a student-produced podcast. • Season 2 Episode 11 | The Science Of Computational Biology | Dr. Ferhat Ay, The Ay Lab, La Jolla Institute for Immunology
    2026/09/30
In this episode of "The Science Of" the students are joined in studio by computational biologist Dr. Ferhat Ay from the Ay Lab at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology. Dr. Ay described how computational modeling and three-dimensional genomics can clarify disease mechanisms and support new therapies. Research FocusDr. Ay’s lab studies epigenetic gene regulation, non-coding DNA, DNA folding, and how three-dimensional genome organization differs across cell types and disease states. The work combines sequencing data, statistics, machine learning, and DNA language models to identify regulatory switches and connect them to genes.Genome organization can explain why disease-associated variants may affect genes that are not their nearest neighbors.Clinical PotentialInsights from non-coding DNA may improve therapies such as engineered CAR T cells by tuning gene-regulatory switches to enhance cancer-fighting activity and persistence.AI and robotics could eventually accelerate screening, but Ferhat emphasized that high-quality human-generated data and scientific creativity remain essential. What regulatory mechanisms can reliably improve cellular therapies? How can computational predictions be validated efficiently enough for personalized treatment?Dr. Ay BackgroundDr. Ay discussed his path from computer science in Turkey to computational biology, including doctoral work at the University of Florida and research training at the University of Washington. His current work is based at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology, with an adjunct role at UC San Diego.Computational BiologyThe field converts large amounts of biological data into useful knowledge.A central challenge is formulating biological questions so they can be represented and solved computationally.Genome RegulationOnly a small fraction of DNA encodes genes; much of the remaining sequence contains regulatory elements. The lab models how DNA folds, how regulatory regions control genes, and how these relationships change in cancer and other diseases.Three-dimensional models can identify disease-relevant gene targets that linear genome analysis may miss.Therapeutic ApplicationsResearch may support CRISPR-based therapies, including work related to sickle cell disease. The lab is testing regulatory DNA switches in CAR T cells to improve cancer response, reduce exhaustion, and support lasting effects.Future DirectionsDr. Ay anticipates broader use of AI, robotics, and high-throughput experiments over the next several decades.Longer-term goals include faster diagnosis, more personalized treatment, and improved understanding of autoimmune disease and cellular therapies.Advice for StudentsHe encouraged curiosity, reading, persistence, outreach, and full engagement in available opportunities."The Science Of" is a student-produced podcast.
