Welcome to Marriage: The Rule Breakers, where Joe and Ann Lester dive into one of the most transformative topics—marriage as God designed it. This is more than just a discussion; it’s a call to reject the world’s view of marriage and embrace God’s perfect plan.

What is Marriage?

Marriage isn’t about legal contracts, government recognition, or societal expectations—it’s a divine covenant between a born-again man and woman, ordained by God to reflect Christ’s love for the Church. Ephesians 5:25-33 gives us a clear blueprint: selfless love, sacrificial care, and unity. It’s not about control or tradition—it’s about relationship. Just as Jesus came to build a relationship with us, marriage mirrors that commitment and love.

Common Struggles in Marriage

Marriage is beautiful, but it’s not always easy. In this episode, we tackle some of the biggest challenges couples face and provide biblical wisdom to overcome them:

• Lack of Communication – James 1:19-20 reminds us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Honest, open conversations lead to a stronger marriage.

Why should you get paid for something you're already supposed to be doing? (2 Corinthians 11:7-9)

You are rewarded when you go above and beyond what you are called to do. (Mark 8:3, Matthew 20:6, John 6:29-35, John 13:34-35, Luke 17:6-10, Colossians 3:23, 1 Corinthians 3:14, 1 Corinthians 15:58, Galatians 6:9, 1 Peter 1:3-9)

Jesus actually instructs everyone to learn from Him instead of human teachings that can be distorted, deceptive, and burdensome? (Matthew 23:4, John 16:13, 1 John 2:27, 1 Timothy 6:3-19, 2 Peter 2:3, 1 Corinthians 9:18-19, Colossians 2:8)

We need to return to what the Bible says, what Jesus teaches us, and understand the true meaning of life. Jesus said you cannot even see the kingdom of heaven unless you are born again.  (John 3:3-7, 1 John 2:27, Romans 2:20-22)

Did Jesus get paid for His service? (Matthew 8:20, Matthew 20:26-28, Mark 10:44, John 16:13-15, 1 John 2:27, Ephesians 6:5-9, Galatians 3:28, Isaiah 52:14, Isaiah 53: 4-12, John 19:13-37, Luke 23:39-50, Matthew 27:23-56, Mark 15:16-41)

Jesus said to give to Caesar what is due to Caesar and to God what is due to God. 
 (Mark 12:17, Matthew 9:9-13, Hosea 6:6, James 4:7, Romans 12:1-2, 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13, 1 Timothy 5:17-18)

Another interesting point is that a lot of the references in the Bible where leaders are paid are actually talking about false teachers making money off the free gift that Jesus gave us.  (1 Timothy 6:3-19, 2 Peter 2:3)

This is what we should be doing as Jesus followers—loving others as Jesus loved us. (2 Corinthians 11:9, 1 Thessalonians 2:9-13, John 15:12, Galatians 3:28)

The apostles had some of the most challenging earthly lives one could imagine. Jesus said, "If they persecuted me, they will persecute you," and this can be seen in the lives of the apostles and all early Christ followers and still continues today. (John 15:18-27)

You can read about part of Paul's challenging life in 2 Corinthians 11:25-30. 

Once you give your life to Jesus and have the Holy Spirit living inside you, He guides you and gives you different urges and desires. You become a new person, Hint: that's why it's called being born again. (John 3:1-21, John 14:6, John 16, 1 John 2:27)

We are to give our hearts 100% to Jesus, and He will take care of the rest. (Psalm 119:10, Matthew 7:7, Matthew 23:23, Acts 4:32-35, James 4:7-17)

But as always, don't just take my word for it. If you did, I would be creating another denomination, and I would have to question myself for doing the same thing everyone else does in this world. So grab your Bible, dust it off, open it to Genesis 1, and don't stop reading until you finish the book of Revelation. And before you rush to put it back on the shelf, start over with Genesis, and repeat this process until God calls you home or until Jesus comes back and gets us.
