  • #69. Why We Have Big Emotions (And How to Handle Them) | My Counselor Says Ft. Megan, Amy, & Greg
    2026/09/22

    Send us Fan Mail

Hey friend! We're doing something new today on The Road to Happiness Podcast!

We're introducing My Counselor Says, conversations with MyCounselor.Online's own NICC® therapists about the questions, struggles, and challenges they help people navigate every day.

For this first conversation, your host Megan Hughes is joined by Amy Bark and Greg Cooney to talk about something every single one of us experiences:

    Emotions.

Why did God give us such big emotions? What are we supposed to do with them? And why do Christians sometimes treat emotions like anger, sadness, fear, or disappointment as if they're inherently bad?

In God's Good Design for Emotions, Amy, Greg, and Megan explore what Scripture teaches us about our emotional lives and some of the common pitfalls that can make emotions even harder to navigate.

    In this episode, they discuss:

    • Why God designed us to experience BIG emotions
    • Why some emotions can feel so BIG
    • Common emotional pitfalls that can keep us stuck
    • What Scriptures say about emotions
    • Why Christians sometimes label certain emotions as "bad"
    • Three important ways to think about your emotions
    • Practical steps you can take when you're struggling with what you feel

Sadness, anger, fear, disappointment, joy, excitement, and everything in between are part of the emotional capacity God designed into you.

The goal isn't to never experience difficult emotions, but learning how to recognize them, understand them, and respond to them in healthy ways.

So the next time a big emotion shows up, instead of immediately asking, "How do I get rid of this?", get curious:

"What is this emotion trying to tell me?"

    Key Takeaways:

    • Having big emotions doesn't automatically mean something is wrong.
    • Emotions are part of God's design and can give us important information about what's happening within us.
    • How we understand and respond to our emotions matters.
    • Christians can sometimes confuse experiencing a difficult emotion with responding to that emotion in an unhealthy way.
    • Scripture gives us a richer picture of emotional life than simply dividing feelings into "good" and "bad."
    • When emotions become overwhelming or difficult to navigate alone, reaching out for support can be an important next step.

    2026/09/15
Send us Fan MailHey friend, we've made it to the final episode of The Anxiety Signal! ❤️Throughout this series, Josh & Cassie have explored anxiety through the lenses of neuroscience, relationships, trauma, emotional health, Scripture, community, therapy, medication, and healing. Now we're wrapping things up with one of the more complicated conversations in anxiety and trauma treatment:👉 What should Christians think about marijuana, ketamine, psychedelics, and other drug-assisted approaches to mental health treatment? There's a big difference between recreational drug use and substances being explored or used within professional treatment settings. There are also important questions about effectiveness, risks, wisdom, legality, medical supervision, and how these approaches fit within a Christian worldview.Today on The Road to Happiness Podcast, Josh & Cassie unpack how they think about these questions and how Christians can approach emerging treatments thoughtfully rather than reacting from either fear or hype.In this episode, Josh & Cassie discuss:The important distinction between recreational drug use and therapeutic treatmentTHC, psychedelics, ketamine, and their use or study in mental health and PTSD treatmentWhy medication or drug-assisted approaches shouldn't automatically be confused with healing the root of anxietyWhy Josh & Cassie believe community and relationships have an important role in healingNon-drug treatment options for anxiety and traumaHow to think carefully and make an informed decision when considering different treatment approachesWhy some of these emerging treatment options remain a work in progress and shouldn't be treated as miracle curesHow Christians can approach complicated mental health decisions with wisdom, discernment, and graceAfter 19 episodes, here's one of the biggest things we hope you take away from The Anxiety Signal:Your anxiety is worth listening to.There are many tools that may play a role in treating anxiety. Some are well established. Others are still developing. Some may help with symptoms, while deeper work may be necessary to address what's underneath them. The goal isn't to chase the newest treatment or reject something simply because it's unfamiliar. The goal is to become informed, seek wise and appropriately qualified guidance, understand your options, and pursue healing with discernment. Most importantly, you don't have to walk that journey alone.Key Takeaways:Recreational drug use and medically supervised treatment are not the same.Different substances and treatment approaches come with different potential benefits, limitations, and risks.Emerging treatments shouldn't be viewed as quick fixes or guaranteed cures for anxiety or trauma.Symptom relief and deeper healing aren't always the same thing.Non-drug approaches remain an important part of the conversation about anxiety and trauma treatment.Healthy relationships and community can play an important role in a person's healing journey.Christians don't have to approach mental health treatment from a place of fear. • #67. The Anxiety Signal Pt. 18: Anxiety Treatments: What Helps Symptoms vs. What Actually Heals?
    2026/09/08

    Send us Fan Mail

Hey friend, welcome back to The Anxiety Signal series.

When you're struggling with anxiety, there are a LOT of things people tell you to try.

Medication. Exercise. Better sleep. Therapy. Prayer. Changing your diet. Managing stress.

And many of those things really can help.

    But here's the bigger question:

👉 Which one actually helps anxiety the most?

Today on The Road to Happiness Podcast, Josh & Cassie explore some of the most common approaches people use to address anxiety, what each one can and can't do, and what it looks like to move beyond simply managing symptoms toward addressing the root of your anxiety.

In this episode, Josh & Cassie discuss:

    • The pros and cons of anxiety medication and the role it can play
    • How lifestyle medicine can help reduce and manage anxiety symptoms
    • Why prayer and spiritual intervention can make a meaningful difference
    • The difference between managing anxiety symptoms and addressing what's underneath them
    • What it means to get to the root of your anxiety instead of only trying to quiet the alarm
    • What actually helps create deeper, lasting healing

So, what helps anxiety the most? There's an important difference between helping your anxiety symptoms and healing what's causing the alarm to keep sounding.

And when you're ready to explore what's underneath that signal, you can begin moving beyond symptom management toward deeper healing.

    Key Takeaways:

    • There isn't just one tool people use to address anxiety, and different approaches can serve different purposes.
    • Medication can play an important role, but it's helpful to understand both its benefits and limitations.
    • Lifestyle medicine can support your nervous system and improve anxiety symptoms.
    • Prayer and spiritual care matter because we're more than just our symptoms.
    • Symptom relief and root-level healing aren't necessarily the same thing.
    • Understanding what your anxiety is signaling can help you identify what needs attention beneath the symptoms.
    • Therapy can provide a space to address the deeper patterns, wounds, relationships, and experiences connected to your anxiety. But not just any therapy...
