You built something real: a practice, a team, a caseload. This is where we make sure it doesn't cost you yourself.

I'm Colleen: therapist, group practice owner, and I'm building the thing in real time. The Regulated CEO is where the two conversations nobody puts together finally meet the real math of scaling, and the nervous system underneath it. The hires I got wrong. The systems that gave me my evenings back. And the part almost no business content touches: what it actually feels like in your body to stop being the one who does all the work and become the one who holds it.

Because you can't out-strategize a protector. And the block to scaling was never strategicit's nervous-system-deep.

If you're good at what you do and quietly exhausted by the fact that being good at it just means more of it come build with me.

  • Ep 5: I Hustled for my Worth
    2026/09/16

"I want to talk about comparison, and in particular the type that creates the dynamic where we hustle for our worth."

This is about the comparison that makes you hustle for your worth. You create something, you get online, you see someone who did it better, and you start second guessing. That's comparison abandonment: when being not chosen once makes the whole world a competition, and everyone a threat to your survival.

For years I let it run me. I remade myself again and again, second guessed every launch until it never came out clean. Building Root & Rise, I finally refused to let my protectors run the show. Now I can be inspired instead of panicked. I can pause, breathe, and decide from my body instead of my fear.

    In this episode:

    • Comparison abandonment, and why being "not chosen" turns the whole world into a competition
    • How comparison sets off three protectors at once: the Overthinker, the Pivoter, the Hustler
    • The years I kept remaking myself, and the launches that never came out clean
    • Building a company without letting the protectors run the show
    • Getting inspired instead of panicked: pause, breathe, decide from the body

You've built something real. This is where you make sure it doesn't cost you yourself.

  • Ep 4: I Kept Moving So I Wouldn't Have to Feel
    2026/09/10

"The Hustler does not want to sit with herself. If she is still for even a second, the feelings, the thoughts, the criticisms, the things she doesn't want to look at start to emerge."

You get busy real fast and fill every nook and cranny with ideas, projects, to-do lists. It feels like productivity. It's also a survival strategy, learned young, and it's ruled by a protector I call the Hustler.

I went through a hard breakup, and within a couple of weeks I'd built an entire course, recorded everything, made all the worksheets. Then I lost the desire to sell it. I almost got high off the creation itself, because go, go, go meant I didn't have to feel the heartbreak, or the fear, or the criticism. [BRIDGE, your line: get us from the breakup course into the reframe.] It's not self-sabotage. It's self-protection.

    In this episode:

    • Why filling every minute is a survival strategy, not just productivity
    • The breakup, the course I built in weeks, and the launch that flopped
    • Dorsal vagal shutdown: overriding your nervous system until there's no juice left to sell
    • Launching Root & Rise on one Facebook post, 20 employees, zero job ads
    • Why delegation isn't about being overwhelmed, it's about what you're not the best at
    • The turn: the Hustler is protecting you, and the work is letting real feedback in without letting her run the whole show

You've built something real. This is where you make sure it doesn't cost you yourself.

  • Ep 3: My Perfectionist Was Hiding as Avoidance
    2026/09/03

"For years I told everyone I was type B. Messy books, notes on my iPad, no real systems. What I didn't realize is that my perfectionist wasn't missing. She was hiding as avoidance."

We think perfectionism looks like color-coded spreadsheets and everything in its place. But there's another face of it almost no one names: avoidance. Not looking at the details. Scrapping the whole thing instead of reviewing it and making small changes. Not launching, not reviewing, not asking for the money — because if you look too closely, you might feel the shame of it not being perfect. So a part of you says: don't look. Just avoid it.

In this episode I get honest about how that protector ran my business for years — the captions I never reread, the systems I wouldn't build, the rage I'd feel when someone asked about my budget. And I tell the full story of the Greece retreat: a beautiful program I delivered on, undone by the details I refused to look at — the villa I never visited in person, the boat, the books I avoided — and what it ultimately cost me. I share it because I want you to know you can get it wrong, recover, and keep building.

    In this episode:
    • The perfectionist who hides as avoidance — why "don't look at it" feels safer than facing the mess
    • Why this shows up hardest around money, selling, and receiving
    • Why you can't discipline or push through this part — and what actually works
    • The Greece retreat: how avoiding the details cost me a business, and what it taught me
    • Holding shame close instead of hiding from it — the tender self underneath the protector
    • Done in a way that aligns with your integrity beats perfect every time

The full life-story version — how this shaped the way I built Root & Rise — is over on my Substack, The Regulated CEO. This show is the nervous-system half, because for an owner those were never two different things.
