Harlan was quiet, gentle, smelled of sawdust and coffee. Luna sat in his trailer as he talked about the maintenance work he did around the park, the little fixes that kept things running. But as the night deepened, she started noticing things: the way every clock in his trailer read the same time, the peculiar pattern of scratches on the inside of his front door, the stories the other residents wouldn't tell. This is a story about the kindness of strangers, and the things you sense but cannot prove. It's about a summer night that stretched into something else, and the decision to never go back to Red Ridge.

The entries were short, each one describing something the writer had seen through the cottage's front window after midnight. A figure crossing the yard. A light from the abandoned house across the creek. The writer's name, signed once on the last page, was Natalie. I never met Natalie, but I started seeing what she saw. Her house was at the end of Remington Road, a gravel lane that dead-ended into a wall of oak trees. The neighbors were few and far between. The first night, I found a key on the kitchen counter that I didn't recognize. It was old, brass, with a red tag that said '1730' in faded marker. I thought nothing of it until the fourth night, when I heard footsteps coming from the basement. Not the creak of old pipes — deliberate, heavy footsteps, like someone walking from one end of a room to another. I checked the basement door. It was locked. And the key I'd found? It fit perfectly. What I found down there is something I still can't explain. I haven't been back to Carthage since. But sometimes, late at night, I hear those same footsteps in my own apartment.
