The Radio Reading Room features the Stories of Americana special Featured Segments feature stories and poetry from some of America's Classic authors, such as, Edgar Allen Poe, Robert Frost, Emily Dickerson, T.S. Elliot and many more. The program is hosted and stories read by long time broadcast veteran and voice artist Myron Hieronymous Thomas. First aired over WQSA AM radio in Sarasota Florida in 1989 the program fast became a favorite of listeners and participants.

  • Why He Carried the Turkey by James Baldwin

    In our next few episodes, we'll be presenting some stories that invoke the Thanksgiving spirit, beginning with one of James Baldwin's short stories. James Arthur Baldwin was born August 2, 1924, and died December 1, 1987. He was an American novelist, playwright, essayist, poet, and activist. His essays, collected in Notes of a Native Son in 1955, explore intricacies of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in the Western society of the United States during the mid-20th century. On a lighter vein, he penned this short Thanksgiving story. It's called Why He Carried the Turkey. Read by Myron Hieronymous Thomas.

    In this episode, we share a story written by J.T. Trowbridge. In this short Thanksgiving story, Trowbridge takes us back to 19th century Boston to experience the sharing of the Thanksgiving spirit by two strangers of differing generations. You'll notice the distinct difference in life from then to what it is now, including the position of the young man, Bert, who sold newspapers.   • Thanksgiving Poems

    In this episode, we'll share some Thanksgiving poems. beginning with one you might recognize from the song, but by a different name. It's called The New England Boys' Song About Thanksgiving Day and was written by Lydia Maria Child. Our next poem is called The Pumpkin, and it's by John Greenleaf Whittier, who lived from 1807 to 1892. and the last is a poem by Myron Hieronymous Thomas, called Autumn in Ohio. All read by Myron Hieronymous Thomas.
