A Spitfire falls out of the summer sky over occupied France, and the news carries a particular shock because this is not simply another pilot lost in combat. It is Douglas Bader, already one of the best-known fighting names in the RAF.

A young trainee opens the throttle on a Tiger Moth and feels the aircraft begin to lift from a grass field. He's still learning the most basic movements of flight. Somewhere far ahead lies a fighter station, a bomber squadron, a night operation over Germany. But none of it can happen unless this first step succeeds.

A Hurricane lifts from RAF Northolt into a late summer sky, but the pilot climbing with it is not fighting his first war. He has already seen Poland fall. He has already seen France collapse. Now, over southern England, he is going back into combat once more.
