The Exploding Whale: Twenty Cases, Unemployed Seagulls, and a Door That Does Not Rain

Episode 25 of The Office 360 Unfiltered. Long walk. Unique true story.

November 9, 1970, a forty-five-foot, eight-ton sperm whale beaches near Florence, Oregon. The sand belongs to the Highway Division. Assistant engineer George Thornton is in charge because his supervisor went hunting. After talking to the Navy, they treat the carcass as a boulder: half a ton of dynamite, twenty cases, seagulls to finish lunch. A veteran on the beach says twenty sticks, not twenty cases. They do not take the note.

November 12, 3:45 p.m. KATU’s Paul Linnman and Doug Brazil are there. The sand column goes a hundred feet. Blubber flies eight hundred feet. Spectators run. A sedan a quarter mile off is crushed. Linnman: the blast blasted blubber beyond all believable bounds. Nobody dies. Most of the whale is still there and has to be buried anyway. Policy now is bury it. Dynamite is off the menu.

A whale is not a boulder. Ads are not seagulls. Four people, Lisbon to New York, build a door that holds. Three clicks. A buy button that buys.

  • The London Beer Flood: One Hoop, a Twenty-Two-Foot Vat, and a Door That Holds
    2026/10/13

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

The London Beer Flood: One Hoop, a Twenty-Two-Foot Vat, and a Door That Holds

Episode 24 of The Office 360 Unfiltered. Long walk. Unique true story.

Monday, 17 October 1814, between five and six. St. Giles, London. Henry Meux and Company’s Horse Shoe Brewery. A wooden vat twenty-two feet high, 3,555 barrels of ten-month porter, full to four inches of the top. Storehouse clerk George Crick sees one iron hoop fall off. He is not alarmed. He has seen that before. Then the vat goes. A twenty-five-foot wall, two and a half bricks thick, goes with it. Neighboring casks join the wave. Porter runs into the rookery, into New Street, into the Tavistock Arms. Eight people die, mostly in basements. Neighbors come out with pots. The coroner’s jury calls it a visitation of God.

The joke is the hoop, not the funerals. Huge is not finished. Usual is how lakes get into kitchens.

Four people, Lisbon to New York, put hoops that stay on. Three clicks. A buy button that buys.

  • The Pepsi Navy: Seventeen Submarines, Shoe-Wax Fizz, and a Coin That Converts

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

The Pepsi Navy: Seventeen Submarines, Shoe-Wax Fizz, and a Coin That Converts

Episode 23 of The Office 360 Unfiltered. Long walk. Unique true story.

1959, Moscow, Kitchen Debate. Donald Kendall gets Khrushchev to drink Pepsi on camera. One cup New York water, one cup Moscow water. The Premier calls the Soviet mix very refreshing. His son said it smelled like shoe wax. The photo goes around the world. 1972: Pepsi is first major American soda into the USSR. Exclusive. Coke locked out. The ruble will not convert, so the tab is vodka — Stolichnaya out, syrup in — for years.

Spring 1989: vodka is not enough. Moscow pays in decommissioned steel. Seventeen attack submarines, a cruiser, a frigate, a destroyer. Pepsi is the middleman. Norway takes the hulls for scrap. For a paperwork minute a cola brand sits on the navy list. Kendall to National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft: we are disarming the Soviet Union faster than you are. Then the boats are washing machines. The fleet was an IOU with a periscope.

Followers that will not buy are vodka. A clip is a submarine on a spreadsheet. Four people, Lisbon to New York, build a door that takes a coin you can spend. Three clicks. A buy button that buys.

  • The Great Emu War: Two Lewis Guns, Ten Thousand Rounds, and a Door the Flock Can Find

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!

The Great Emu War: Two Lewis Guns, Ten Thousand Rounds, and a Door the Flock Can Find

Episode 22 of The Office 360 Unfiltered. Longer on purpose. A unique true story.

Western Australia, November 1932. Soldier-settler wheat farms, Depression prices, about twenty thousand emus treating fences like a suggestion. Defence Minister Sir George Pearce sends Major G.P.W. Meredith, Sergeant McMurray, and Gunner O’Halloran — three men, two Lewis guns, ten thousand rounds — to handle a continent of birds. First contact at Campion: the flock splits and sprints. They mount a gun on a truck. The truck bounces. The gunner cannot aim. Meredith writes that the birds have the invulnerability of tanks. Claimed tally: about 986 birds, roughly ten rounds each, a number historians still side-eye. Parliament nicknames Pearce the Minister for the Emu War and asks whether medals go to the soldiers or the emus. A second round in December. Same split. The bounty afterward did more than the artillery.

You cannot hose a problem that refuses to stand in a line. Authors spray ads at the horizon. Readers split like Campion. Four people, Lisbon to New York, build a fence and a gate. Three clicks. A buy button that buys.

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Napoleon vs. the Rabbits: The Wrong Hunt, Tame Crowds, and the-office360.com

Episode 21 of The Office 360 Unfiltered. A very funny hour.

July 1807. Treaties of Tilsit. Napoleon wants a hunt. Chief of staff Alexandre Berthier stocks a field, fast, with domestic rabbits — farm animals who hear a boot and think lunch. Cages open. They do not run. They charge. General Thiébault wrote that they turned the Emperor’s flank, piled up between his legs, and forced the conqueror of conquerors to retreat. Historian David Chandler says the horde split into two wings and poured toward the imperial coach. Some jumped in. The man who stood at Austerlitz lost a field to lettuce logistics.

People still argue hundreds versus thousands. Nobody argues the punch line. Wild game runs from a gun. Tame followers hop toward whoever shakes the bag. A feed is not a hunt. A clip is not a storefront.

Four people, Lisbon to New York, put the bowl on your table. Three clicks. A buy button that buys.

  • Second Date Update: Brooke and Jubal, Minecraft Radio, and a Door That Picks Up

Second Date Update: Brooke and Jubal, Minecraft Radio, and a Door That Picks Up

Episode 19 of The Office 360 Unfiltered. A funny radio story still living in 2026 thumbs.

Brooke Fox and Jubal Fresh, MOViN 92.5 Seattle, nationally syndicated. The hit was Second Date Update: you thought the date went well, they ghosted, you wrote the station, and two hosts called the ghoster live while you listened from the kitchen. Phone Taps. Loser Line. Awkward Tuesday. If you want a second date, we’ll pay for it — a line older than the show, stolen from Love Connection.

Jubal leaves in 2020. The bumper becomes Brooke & Jeffrey. Then TikTok and YouTube, still in 2026, serve the old calls under Minecraft. Kids who were in middle school when the pairing ended think the show is new. They google the names. They do not type a station. They do not type a site. The clip is famous. The door is missing.

Same as a book with a million views of a quote and a Buy button to nowhere. Four people, Lisbon to New York, build a page that picks up.

Maps Is Number One: The World Cup Emptied Google, the U.N. Corrected Africa, and the-office360.com

Episode 18 of The Office 360 Unfiltered. A 2026 worldwide search story.

The biggest tournament on earth just ended. Spain 1, Argentina 0, extra time, Ferran Torres at 106, MetLife, New Jersey. Then the World Cup words fell out of Google’s global top 100. What sat back on the throne? Maps. Tens of millions of searches. People still type a destination into a search box because typing an address feels like homework.

Same month, September 4, 2026: the U.N. General Assembly votes 164 to 1, six abstentions, to encourage Equal Earth maps over Mercator. Togo carried it. Mercator, 1569, was for sailors. On that rectangle Greenland looks ready to arm-wrestle Africa. Africa is about fourteen times the land. Your uncle’s classroom map was a navigation cheat sheet pretending to be a family portrait.

Wrong-scale map, wrong-scale website. Readers bounce. Four people, Lisbon to New York, draw a page true to size. Three clicks. A buy button that buys.

  • : A con man sold Paris for scrap. Twice. If you don’t hold the keys, you’re the mark.

The Man Who Sold the Eiffel Tower Twice: Rented Hallways, Fake Deeds, and the-office360.com

Episode 17 of The Office 360 Unfiltered. A long, ridiculous true story.

Paris, 1925. The Eiffel Tower is famous, expensive, and — in the papers — maybe scrap. Victor Lustig prints fake ministry letterhead, books the Hôtel de Crillon, and whispers to scrap dealers that the government is quietly selling the iron. He is not hunting the richest man. He is hunting the hungriest. André Poisson pays on the order of seventy thousand francs, sale plus the envelope under the table. Lustig leaves for Austria. Poisson is so embarrassed he never calls the police. Lustig reads the papers, sees nothing, and comes back to sell the same tower again. The second time a dealer gets an itch. Police. A liner to America. The iron stays in Paris. The only person who got paid did not own a rivet.

The long argument is still on: is the feed enough, or do you need a house with a deed. A meeting is not a key. A social profile is not a website. A marketplace is not a home.

Four people, Lisbon to New York, build a page you own. Three clicks. A buy button that buys.
