The Great Emu War: Two Lewis Guns, Ten Thousand Rounds, and a Door the Flock Can Find
Episode 22 of The Office 360 Unfiltered. Longer on purpose. A unique true story.
Western Australia, November 1932. Soldier-settler wheat farms, Depression prices, about twenty thousand emus treating fences like a suggestion. Defence Minister Sir George Pearce sends Major G.P.W. Meredith, Sergeant McMurray, and Gunner O’Halloran — three men, two Lewis guns, ten thousand rounds — to handle a continent of birds. First contact at Campion: the flock splits and sprints. They mount a gun on a truck. The truck bounces. The gunner cannot aim. Meredith writes that the birds have the invulnerability of tanks. Claimed tally: about 986 birds, roughly ten rounds each, a number historians still side-eye. Parliament nicknames Pearce the Minister for the Emu War and asks whether medals go to the soldiers or the emus. A second round in December. Same split. The bounty afterward did more than the artillery.
You cannot hose a problem that refuses to stand in a line. Authors spray ads at the horizon. Readers split like Campion. Four people, Lisbon to New York, build a fence and a gate. Three clicks. A buy button that buys.
