Welcome to Simple Joe. I’m glad you’re here.
On today’s episode of Simple Joe, I start with a wild fact about how the average person sheds 50 to 100 hairs a day, and how that hits a little too close to home after raising three daughters with long hair. Then I take a look at the weather in Ashburn, Virginia, where rain will taper off this afternoon with a high of 65 and a low of 46, and here in Cincinnati, where it’s a cool, breezy 50 with rain in the morning and partly sunny skies heading into Halloween. I celebrate birthdays for John Adams, Michael Collins, Grace Slick, Henry Winkler, Kevin Pollak, and Nia Long. I look back at some big events that happened on this day, like Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds broadcast, the completion of Mount Rushmore, Muhammad Ali’s “Rumble in the Jungle” victory, and the devastating landfall of Hurricane Sandy. It’s also National Candy Corn Day, Checklist Day, Buy a Donut Day, Create a Great Memory Day, and Pumpkin Bread Day, so grab a donut and make a memory. For Thursday’s Interesting Story, I dig into the eerie yet touching tale of Leila’s Hair Museum in Independence, Missouri, where thousands of intricate hair art pieces, including strands attributed to Lincoln, Monroe, and Elvis, are being sent to major museums after Leila’s passing. It’s a story about legacy, connection, and how even something as strange as a lock of hair can carry love across generations.
