  • Introduction into Motor Signatures and Motor Preferences for Beginners with Prashant Patel (Motor Preferences Coaches) and one of the Co-Founders of the concept Bertrand Theraulaz (ActionTypes)
    2026/01/27

Motor Signatures (And the Motor Preferences within them) have been developed over the last 36 years by Bertrand Theraulaz (Switzerland Volleyball) and Ralph Hippolite (French Volleyball and won over 60 Olympic Medals as a coach with Motor Signatures).

Each person has their own Unique Motor Signature which comprises of their Deep Motivational Drivers (Subconscious level) and a Motor Profile (More in the Conscious) which is how we move, think and perceive the world which then leads to how we interact with the world through movement and communication.

We have Four Motor Families, two of which are 'Walking Top': Rhythmical (Initiate from the Reft) and Conceptual (Intitiate from the Right) and two are 'Walking Bottom': Distal (Initiating from far away) and Global (Initiating from Close to the Body).

Throughout the day we use all of the four motor skills for different purposes, our main profile is when we are: Energetic, and feeling positive, our Exploration zone is also a recovery zone is when we are tired, stressed or learning. We have other profiles for our Creative side.

There are numerous preferences which are discussed in the podcast:

Horizontal vs Vertical (Orientation of limbs to the spine and for perception of information at angles)

Motor Shoulder (Our aiming Shoulder and this determines whether we hip shoulder separate more or less in the Preparation phase or the Follow through phase

Mobile and Stable Point (Levels of Hip Shoulder Separation or the XFactor in Biomechanics, do we need more/less to generate force)

Motor Hip (Which hip we rotate around)

Motor Eye (This is used to track moving objects and information at high speeds; whereas the Dominant eye is used to aim at static targets ie Darts)

    And more
