  • Episode 20 A Moment of Gratitude It’s Okay to Accept Help
    2026/08/27

Sometimes an ordinary moment makes you stop and appreciate the community around you.

In today’s episode of The Midday Show, J.R. reflects on learning more about his children’s school Breakfast Club and why programs like school breakfast initiatives, food banks, and other community supports matter so much.

It also brings back memories of growing up in a low-income household, when something as simple as having enough milk for a bowl of cereal wasn’t always guaranteed. There can be stigma around asking for help. We sometimes convince ourselves that somebody else needs it more, or that we should struggle through on our own. But these programs exist for a reason. If you need a little help putting food on the table or making it through a difficult month, there is no shame in using the resources available to you.

Most importantly, this episode is a reminder that you matter. Keep going, keep doing your best, and don’t be ashamed to accept a helping hand when you need one. Plus, we celebrate a milestone: Episode 20 means The Midday Show has officially made it through its first full month of Monday-to-Friday episodes. Thank you for being here. I’m happy you’re here.

  • Episode 19: It’s Okay to Not Always Be Your Best
    2026/08/26

Some days you wake up ready to take on the world. Other days… you’re just kind of blah. On this episode of The Midday Show with J.R. Bjornson, J.R. celebrates National Toilet Paper Day and National Dog Day before the conversation takes a more personal turn.

J.R. shares the story of his late cat Sydney, adopting his dog Murphy, the strange way certain songs become attached to memories, and why Imagine Dragons’ “Waves” will always remind him of a best friend he lost. There’s also back-to-school sticker shock, bills, streaming subscriptions, Spotify versus Apple Music, and the realization that sometimes you’re simply not going to be at your best. And that’s okay. You don’t have to quit just because today isn’t your day. Sometimes showing up, doing what you can, and giving yourself permission to have a mellow day is enough.

  • How Often Should You Shower? And National Banana Split Day
    2026/08/25

Happy Tuesday! It’s August 25, 2026, and episode 18 of The Midday Show with J.R. Bjornson is diving into something surprisingly personal: hygiene.

Today, J.R. is celebrating National Banana Split Day, Kiss and Make Up Day, Secondhand Wardrobe Day and the anniversary of the U.S. National Park Service before tackling a big question: How often should we really shower?

With a house full of seven people, water bills going up, dry skin and a new appreciation for his wife’s shampoo, J.R. is sharing why he’s trying to shower only once every three days. Plus, there’s the other side of smelling good: can you wear too much fragrance? How often do you shower? Daily? Every other day? Every three days? And are you secretly sneaking your partner’s shampoo? Grab a banana split or maybe take a shower and spend a few minutes chatting with J.R. for another relaxed Tuesday edition of The Midday Show.

  • Pluto’s Demotion and My ADHD Brain
    2026/08/24

What happens when you lose cell service, FM radio and basically all connection to civilization on a mountain highway? You discover the magic of AM radio. On Episode 17 of The Midday Show with J.R. Bjornson, J.R. talks about the family road trip to Radium Hot Springs, finding pop music on 870 AM in the mountains, and why old-school AM radio can travel so much farther than FM.

It’s also August 24, which means we’re celebrating National Waffle Day, National Peach Pie Day, International Strange Music Day and the 20th anniversary of Pluto getting demoted to dwarf-planet status. J.R. remains firmly on Team Pluto.

Then things get a little more personal as J.R. talks about taking a short break from his ADHD medication, what his busy unmedicated brain feels like, and why medication makes his mind feel quieter and easier to focus.

Plus: back-to-school excitement, five kids, a perpetually messy house, 90s nostalgia and the usual collection of thoughts that somehow become a podcast. The Midday Show with J.R. Bjornson new episodes Monday through Friday.

  • The Power of Recording Videos and Chocolate Pecan Pie
    2026/08/20

What do National Radio Day, mosquitoes, bacon, lemonade, chocolate pecan pie, procrastination, and a blind guy with a camera have in common? Somehow, they all made it into Episode 15 of The Midday Show with J.R. Bjornson.

J.R. celebrates August 20 with National Radio Day and reflects on how his childhood love of radio eventually evolved into podcasting. Then it’s on to World Mosquito Day, National Bacon Lovers Day, National Lemonade Day, and the dangerously delicious National Chocolate Pecan Pie Day.

But today’s episode takes a more personal turn when J.R. explains why recording and editing videos means so much to him. With limited vision, a camera gives him something his eyes often can’t: the ability to stop a moment, enlarge it, examine the little details, and discover things he didn’t notice while they were happening—including realizing later that his wife was smiling at one of his jokes.

Sometimes making videos isn’t really about views, followers, or algorithms. Sometimes it’s simply another way of seeing the world.

Plus: the legendary Procrastinators Club where not even the president showed up, a shout-out to listener Dave Nicholson, excitement for Saturday’s comedy adventure, and an abrupt departure because the pizza is ready.

Episode 15 of The Midday Show with J.R. Bjornson—a microphone, a dream, and apparently some chocolate pecan pie.
