  • Moving from freelance to a permanent role
    2025/11/21

On this episode I chat with Christian Smith, who came to me for mentoring advice in 2020. At the time he was a lawyer and aspiring journalist particularly keen on a career in foreign news, broadcasting, or long form journalism. Over the course of the next year or so we had a few sessions and Christian eventually worked for me and progressed through places like Times Radio and is now a Broadcaster and litigation editor at The Lawyer.

We chat about his path into UK media, how networking is vital and how freelancing can open doors to a permanent role.

  • BBC Trump-gate
    2025/11/14

On this 'emergency' episode I look at the problems for the BBC after a tumultuous week and how it managed to broadcast a doctored version of the Donald Trump documentary. To get an idea of life at the BBC I speak to Sanjeev Shetty, who worked there for 23 years. He talks about how the newsroom always felt a safer space for those on the left than the right. I also talk to PR professional Josh Wheeler to get a view on how the BBC has handled this crisis.

    2025/11/07

We've reached 25 episodes of the podcast and this week I chat to Jo Wood, Managing Director of The Media Exchange recruitment consultant.

As you’ll discover Jo has had an interesting path into this sector and set up The Media Exchange in 1993.

We discuss what has changed since, how recruitment can be made more efficient and personal and where bias and discrimination is still sadly a major issue.

  • Moving from Beijing to London
    2025/10/24

This week I talk to Robin Zhang about how he moved from China to the UK to study journalism and pursue his dream of working in UK radio. When he first came to me for support he had completed an MA at Cardiff University and was working as a volunteer in radio, but wanted to bridge that gap from student to a full-time job. Find out what we worked on to do that and what extra things Robin did to break into the industry. Since we first met Robin has worked for Times Radio, GB News and now BBC News.
