  • 83. Joel Temperly - Donuts, Cops & Controversy
    2025/07/27
In Episode 83 of The Lui Diaz Podcast, I get comedian Joel Temperly back for a second time to deliver a lively mix of banter and insights from his recent solo show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.Have a crack at The Lui Diaz Podcast! Key Themes: Comedy, urban life, cultural differences, personal growth, self-worth, social media, creative constraints, audience interaction, humour in everyday We duo kick off with humorous exchanges about Uber woes, parking fines, and Melbourne’s quirky vibe, setting a lighthearted tone. The conversation shifts to Joel’s 2025 Melbourne International Comedy Festival run, spotlighting his show From Russia With Lols, inspired by his year in Russia and his Russian girlfriend. Joel shares the challenges of performing in a small bottle shop venue, navigating crowd work, and even handling a police encounter during setup. The episode takes a deeper turn as we discuss an open-micers dk pic mishap, taking the discussion to cancel culture and the boundaries of comedic taunting. I also reflect on my personal self-esteem journey, recounting how teaching skateboarding—first for free, then at $90/hour—revealed intriguing cultural differences in gratitude and also boosted my self-worth and self-belief. From Germans’ generosity to Brazilians’ boldness, these experiences shaped my approach to valuing my work and ultimately developing an appreciation for the kind of permission-less innovation helped me start this podcast. Packed with laughs and introspection, this episode offers a raw look at comedy, self-worth, and the art of podcasting. • 81. Johnno Smallman - Candid Confessions & Night-sabres
    2025/07/20
Johnno Smallman is a creative event host based in Melbourne, Australia and he joins me from Hosier Lane in Melbourne’s CBD to have a very candid chat for what is Episode 81 of The Lui Diaz Podcast. Thanks for subscribing to The Lui Diaz Podcast!Key Themes: Creative expression, personal growth, authenticity, mental health, social dynamics, humor, vulnerability, urban culture, self-discovery, human connection.Listener WarningThis episode contains adult themes including, but not limited to innuendo, horrible jokes and stories of shameful adult behaviour, which we of course aren’t proud of, but life has a way of bring out the worst in us, only to give us something to redeem ourselves from. In order to fully appreciate what’s beautiful about humanity and life itself, you have to be willing to be honest about and accept life’s ugliness too.SummaryWhat I love about Johnno Smallman is that he makes it feel safe to bring out that playful, dorky part of myself that doesn’t always get airtime. This episode is less of an interview and more like a conversation between two old friends catching up.. open, honest, and a little shameless and all over the place in the best way. The kind of episode that’s packed full the ugly truth-telling, but ability to LOL about it that the world still seems to be deprived of.We start by unpacking the messy behind-the-scenes journey of learning how to podcast, from location mishaps to my many production fumbles, and the creative challenges we’ve both faced in our pursuit to make things that uplift others. We also talk about the tougher stuff—my ongoing relationship with my many vices, including what I’ve come to call my “gamble-rage,” and a story from Johnno about a family lottery win that led to an unfortunate family divide. At its core, this episode is about two very different guys with some shared battles, figuring things out in their early 40s, and finding connection through creativity, laughter, and the kind of conversation that reminds you you’re not alone. Also… Johnno’s might be the greatest wingman I’ve met. Remind me to try it out sometime. You can follow Johnno and learn more about his event Exposure on Instagram via - https://www.instagram.com/thebizzwithjohnno/🫶 Thanks again for listening and watching! • 80. Rob Hourigan - Wild Australia & Standup Comedy
    2025/07/13
Rob Hourigan is an Irish comedian currently based in Melbourne, Australia and kind enough to join me for Episode 80 of what might be the most Melbourne way to record a podcast. Please subscribe to The Lui Diaz Podcast! It might be hard to believe, but this self-described once ‘quiet kid’ left his cosy teaching job back in Ireland to move out to Australia for a once in a lifetime experience, collectively known as a kind of right of passage for the Irish. But make no mistake, behind his pleasant demeanour and comforting smile, Rob Hourigan is a wild man in the making! I mean, he moved to Australia, started out selling medicinal cannabis, survived a wild magpie attack, took up the terrifying art of stand-up comedy and hung out with a guy who goes by the name of ‘Snake Hunter’. It’s like something out of a movie! But all jokes aside, it was a real pleasure to sit with Rob as he embarked on his final few months in Aus to indulge in a Portuguese Tart, a bag of Tato’s and a bit of craic in one of Melbourne’s most iconic laneways. If Rob taught me anything it’s not to underestimate yourself and how quickly your life can change if you’re willing to take chances.Key Themes: Cultural adaptation, comedy, adventure, Australian wildlife, Irish identity, personal growth, community, travel, resilience, embracing the unexpected.Highlights:* The Magpie Attack: Rob recounts a harrowing encounter with an Australian magpie on St Kilda’s promenade, where he was pecked in the eye while distracted by a café sign. “It felt like somebody threw a phone at me, like a mobile phone”. This chaotic tale of suburban wildlife and human indifference is peak unhinged Aussie madness.* Tagging Along with the Snake Hunter:Rob’s obsession with snakes led him to message a Melbourne snake relocator on Instagram and join him for a morning of releasing deadly tiger snakes. Standing just six feet from a venomous serpent, Rob was both terrified and thrilled as the professional calmly handled the situation. “I was like, you know, ready to run at any second”. The sheer audacity of casually hanging out with a snake handler is gloriously reckless.* Comedy as a Cultural Bridge:Rob reflects on how comedy helped him navigate his move to Melbourne, where the lack of “begrudgery” (Ireland’s version of tall poppy syndrome) gave him the confidence to try stand-up. “I notice with Australians... they’re more inclined to be like, oh, good on you, kind of a thing”. This highlights the cultural freedom that can unlock personal growth in a new environment.* The Power of Taking Risks:Rob’s decision to contact a snake handler and try comedy in a foreign country underscores the value of seizing opportunities without overthinking. “No one knows you here, I could try it”. This mindset of embracing the unknown is a call to action for stepping outside one’s comfort zone. You can follow Rob Hourigan on Instagram via - https://www.instagram.com/rob_hourigan_comedy/🫶 Thanks again for listening and watching!
