  • SE2, EP16: Gloria Jean Collins Thomas - Growing Up on Elgin's Southside
    2026/09/15

In this interview, recorded by the late Coach T. Berry for the Elgin Oral History Project on April 5, 2022, my Aunt Gloria Jean Collins Thomas, the oldest of nine, takes us back to growing up on the Southside of Elgin, Texas: gardens and hog-killing time, graduating from Washington High before integration, the marching band and being voted football sweetheart, ordering fish plates at the back window during segregation, and building a 45-year career in Houston.

Shared with gratitude and with our family's blessing. Rest in peace, Coach Berry.

I had the privilege to carve out some time and catch up with the first African American Lead Spectrum Officer in the Marine Corps. JWO provides insight into his upbringing and journey and it’s evident that his early experiences helped to shape his ability to persevere through difficult situations in the military. This is a audio journey that will serve many well at all professional levels. Enjoy!
