In this interview, recorded by the late Coach T. Berry for the Elgin Oral History Project on April 5, 2022, my Aunt Gloria Jean Collins Thomas, the oldest of nine, takes us back to growing up on the Southside of Elgin, Texas: gardens and hog-killing time, graduating from Washington High before integration, the marching band and being voted football sweetheart, ordering fish plates at the back window during segregation, and building a 45-year career in Houston.
Shared with gratitude and with our family's blessing. Rest in peace, Coach Berry.
