• 274 Self-Regulation for Parents: Why Taking Care of Yourself Isn't Selfish, with Coach Brandon Barber
    2026/07/09
Hey Friends~ Today we are investing in you first, because the healthier you are, the healthier your parenting becomes. With that in mind, the first part of this episode focuses on you as a human being—as an adult. I think that's valuable. After all, before we're parents, we're people. And that's what leads us to an important question: What if becoming a calmer, more regulated version of yourself is one of the greatest gifts you could give your child? Coach Brandon Barber shares practical strategies for understanding your subconscious mind, calming your nervous system, and breaking unhelpful patterns. Together, we explore how these principles can strengthen the way you show up as a parent. You'll leave with practical tools like creating a "worry window," building daily resilience habits, and learning how your calm presence can help another person's nervous system settle, including your child's. Caring for yourself is one of the most meaningful ways you can care for your child. Always cheering you on! After spending decades coaching leaders, entrepreneurs, and families — creating 100+ courses that have helped over a million individuals — they saw a deeper pattern: Kids need emotionally regulated, present, resilient parents. Through their resilience-based parenting frameworks, Brandon and Michelle teach moms and dads how to stop reacting from stress, fear, or exhaustion and start responding with clarity, connection, and confidence — so their children grow up feeling safe, seen, and supported. • 273 Margot Bevington: Can Music Help Kids Acquire Language?
    2026/07/02
Hey Friends~ Have you ever noticed your child can sing every word of a favorite song but struggles to say those same words in conversation? Or maybe your child isn't talking yet, avoids back-and-forth interaction, has difficulty with rhythm or imitation, or simply learns differently than other children. What if music could become a bridge? In this episode, we explore how music creates a safe space for children to learn. Rhythm, repetition, melody, and predictable patterns slow language down, making it easier for the brain to process, remember, and use. Music also activates multiple areas of the brain, strengthening memory, movement, attention, and learning in ways that everyday conversation often cannot. My guest knows this personally. She was largely nonverbal until she was four or five years old, and music became the place where language finally made sense. Today, she's an award-winning children's musician whose songs are intentionally designed to build language, communication, and connection for all children, especially those who learn differently. If you've ever wondered whether music could help your child communicate, this conversation may open an entirely new way of thinking about learning. Always cheering you on! • 270 Tracie Rieder: Using Signs As A Bridge To Speaking
    2026/06/12

    Hey Friends~

Your child hears you say something... but did they actually get the message?

Sometimes communication breaks down because children can't fully access language. It may be hearing loss, difficulty processing information, speech delays, or simply not yet having the words they need.

In today's episode in the series When Communication is Hard, we're exploring how access impacts communication and why one surprisingly powerful tool—sign language—can help many children, not just those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Join me and special guest Tracie as we talk about reducing frustration, building connection, and giving children more ways to communicate.

    Always cheering you on!

  • 269 When Communication Is Hard: Selective Mutism and Anxiety-Based Speech Challenges, part 9
    2026/06/04

    Hey Friends~

Some kids can talk—but don’t in certain situations. Maybe they suddenly go silent at school, church, or around other people. In this episode of our When Communication Is Hard series, we’re talking about selective mutism and anxiety-based communication challenges. These children may have the words, know what they want to say, and still feel unable to access their voice in certain situations.

We’ll look at what may be happening beneath the silence, why pressure backfires and makes talking harder, and how safety, predictability, and connection gently support speech over time. So, If you’ve ever wondered whether your child is being shy, stubborn, or overwhelmed, this episode will help you see the struggle with fresh eyes—and respond with more understanding and hope.

    Always cheering you on!

  • 268 Emily Cadiz: What If Music Isn’t a Bonus—but the Brain’s Gateway to Reading?
    2026/05/28
Hey Friends~ Most of us don’t remember what it felt like to learn language for the very first time as young children. We focus so much on letters, books, and what children see—but are we overtraining eyes while undertraining ears? After experiencing a brain injury that forced her to relearn language from the beginning, today’s guest, Emily Cadiz, gained a life-changing understanding of what it truly feels like to struggle with communication and learning. As a music professional already working in special education, she turned to music during her recovery to help regain movement, speech, language, and reading — ultimately leading her into NIH research exploring music’s impact on children’s language and literacy development. In this episode, we explore the powerful connection between music, the brain, communication, and learning. You’ll hear why music is such a natural pathway for language development and discover simple ways parents can use rhythm, movement, chanting, and song in everyday life to support children’s speech, language, and early literacy skills.
