The Urban Evolution: Exploring Spatial Imagination with Rahul Mehrotra

In this episode of The Idea Sandbox, I spoke with architect and urban designer Rahul Mehrotra, whose work bridges architecture, conservation, and urban planning across India. Rahul's ideas challenge conventional thinking about how we build cities, particularly in rapidly developing contexts.

Our conversation traversed the ongoing city-renaming frenzy in India, revealing the hidden costs beyond just changing signboards. Rahul offered a brilliant insight about cities as brands with accumulated goodwill and recognition value - something rarely considered in bureaucratic renaming decisions.

What stood out most was Rahul's concept of "soft thresholds" - architectural design that deliberately creates permeable boundaries between different social classes. His example of corporate buildings designed with gardens that gardeners maintain, enabling eye contact and relationship-building between executives and maintenance staff, demonstrates how architecture can subtly resist social stratification.

Rahul outlined four distinct architectural approaches in India: global practices (the "architecture of impatient capital"), regional practices, alternative practices, and the "resurfacing of the ancient." Rather than advocating for one approach, he emphasizes their simultaneous validity and the need for coherent coexistence.

His research on "Becoming Urban" reveals how outdated classification criteria prevent thousands of large settlements from receiving proper municipal governance and infrastructure. This systemic issue diverts resources away from where they're needed, causing cascading inefficiencies throughout India's development.

Perhaps most provocative was Rahul's perspective on architects' social responsibility. Just as society invests in doctors for better health, he argues society invests in architects to imagine better spatial possibilities - a responsibility many in the profession haven't fully embraced.

The conversation left me contemplating how small design decisions can either reinforce social divides or create opportunities for community cohesion. Rahul's work demonstrates that truly innovative solutions don't just address technical problems - they reshape the very way we interact with each other in shared spaces.

  • A Veteran Journalist's Unvarnished Look at Modern India
    2025/04/07

#Pure Intentions, Bold Journalism: A Conversation with Kalpana Sharma

In this illuminating episode, veteran journalist Kalpana Sharma brings decades of fearless reporting and sharp cultural insights to The Idea Sandbox. Our conversation cuts through the noise to examine fundamental questions about India's social transformation - questions often buried under the daily churn of headlines and hot takes. Through the lens of pure journalistic integrity, we explore how institutions shape society, how technology might enhance democracy, and what it means to seek truth in an age of polarization.

    ## Episode Highlights:

    - The profound implications of city renaming campaigns and their deeper significance beyond administrative changes

    - A candid examination of persistent social hierarchies in modern India

    - The role of technology in enhancing democratic transparency and civic engagement

    - Fresh perspectives on violence, social change, and the power of civil society

    - The vital importance of independent journalism in maintaining democratic discourse

Our conversation reveals how pure intentions in journalism can illuminate society's blind spots and challenge comfortable narratives. Kalpana's insights, drawn from years of ground-level reporting and thoughtful analysis, offer a masterclass in how bold journalism can catalyze social understanding and change.

    ## Key Insights:

"Our politics has become so poison now. And I'm saying now, it's, I mean, it's been poisoned before, but it's reached a point where I honestly don't know whether in my lifetime it's going to turn back because, you know, once you push hatred and othering of full sections of your society as part of political discourse, then to reverse that is very difficult." - Kalpana Sharma.

The discussion moves beyond surface-level analysis to examine the structural challenges facing Indian democracy while highlighting paths toward positive change through civic engagement and technological innovation.

Oron Catts is the Director of the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Western Australia and was the founding director of SymbioticA, the artistic research laboratory. His groundbreaking work in biological arts has been exhibited globally, challenging our understanding of life and biotechnology through artistic exploration.

In a world increasingly seduced by technological solutions, my conversation with Oron Catts serves as a gentle but powerful reminder of the importance of questioning our assumptions about life itself. As someone coming from an engineering background, I found myself humbled and enlightened by Oron's artistic-philosophical approach to exploring the boundaries between living and non-living matter. Through his work at SymbioticA and now at the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Western Australia, Oron has dedicated his life to probing uncomfortable questions about our relationship with biological materials and the ethical implications of our technological progress.

What struck me most profoundly was Oron's example of extracting living cells from seemingly "dead" rabbit heads - a vivid illustration that challenges our binary understanding of life and death. His work reveals that life exists in gradients rather than absolutes, forcing us to confront uncomfortable questions about consciousness, existence, and our technological interventions in natural processes. The conversation traveled through fascinating territory, from the false promises of "victimless" lab-grown meat to the concerning decline in critical thinking in our educational institutions. Oron's sincere dedication to being a "problem seeker" rather than a problem solver highlights the vital importance of art in our society - not as mere decoration, but as a crucial tool for cultural scrutiny and ethical exploration.

Perhaps most importantly, Oron's work serves as a crucial counterpoint to the prevalent narrative of technological utopianism. His thoughtful critique of the "nature-free existence" promised by modern biotechnology reveals the hidden costs and externalities that often go unexamined in our rush toward progress. Through our conversation, it became clear that we need more voices like Oron's - voices that dare to ask difficult questions, that probe the uncomfortable spaces between our technological capabilities and our ethical understanding.

In this compelling conversation with Varnika Singh, an animal protection lawyer with the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations (FIAPO), we explore India's complex relationship with animal rights and welfare. The discussion reveals a profound paradox: while India's spiritual traditions emphasize respect for all living beings, our current treatment of animals often falls short of these ideals. Singh shares insights into the challenges facing animal welfare in India, from weak legal enforcement to societal indifference, while offering hope through education and systematic change.

The conversation challenges us to confront our collective blindness to animal suffering and questions why a nation that prides itself on moral leadership struggles with animal welfare. We explore how this disconnect between religious reverence and practical treatment reflects deeper societal issues, and discuss concrete steps toward building a more compassionate future. Through personal stories, legal insights, and cultural analysis, this episode invites us to reimagine our relationship with animals and our role in protecting their welfare.
