概要

Looking for honest stories about people, not product reviews? You're in the right place.

The Human Diagnostic isn't a how-to HVAC podcast. It's what a 45-year Master Technician notices about people after 90,000 service calls across gas plants, oil rigs, hospital preservation systems, high-rises, feedlots, walk-in freezers, and residential homes all over Central Oklahoma.

Hosted by Dave Hartzell, each episode tells a real story from a real service call. Sometimes he's driving to the job and predicting what he's about to walk into. Sometimes he just left and he's still working through what he saw. Either way, the story turns out to be about more than HVAC.

Topics you'll hear across the season:

✅ The customer nobody wanted to take, and what changed when someone finally did
✅ Why the person researching their broken AC at midnight isn't being difficult, they're scared
✅ What 45 years of walk-ins, weddings, funerals, and broken water heaters teaches you about anxiety
✅ The tech who can fix anything but can't explain it, and why the customer doesn't trust him
✅ The review you can't place, the moment you never forget, the call that changed how you work
✅ What gets lost when we treat people like tickets, and what gets found when we don't

Whether you fix things for a living, manage people who do, or just like good stories from someone who has been everywhere and met everybody, The Human Diagnostic gives you the part of the job that never shows up in an invoice.

  • Wide Awake at 3am: The Night Repair His Brain Resisted
    2026/11/05

He heard it come on at three in the morning and lay there in the dark waiting for it to do it again.

It was the first hard cold of November, the week the wind quits being weather and starts being a presence in the house. Brick ranch from the seventies, out on a section road east of town, one of those houses where the living room is the whole house because that is where the television and the recliner and the dog are. Retired fellow, widower, seventy-eight, lived alone. Three weeks earlier I had put a new furnace in for him. The old one had cracked its heat exchanger, so there was no debate about replacing it, and the new one went in clean.

He called the office a little after seven the next morning. Not mad. Worried, which is worse, because worried people have already decided something and are hoping you will tell them they are wrong. He said the new furnace was cycling wrong. It came on at three in the morning when the house was not cold. It ran, it shut off, it ran again. He said the old one never did that.

I went out that afternoon myself. A new install with a complaint in the first month gets me, not whoever is closest, because if I made a mistake I want to be the one who finds it. I pulled the filter. I checked the limit switch, cleaned the flame sensor, watched it fire, timed the blower ramp, and put my probes on the supply and return to read the temperature rise across the exchanger. All of it was inside the lines on the data plate.

Then I pulled the run log off the thermostat. The furnace had run eleven times between dark and daylight, most of them eight to twelve minutes apiece, spaced the way a setback schedule spaces them. There was a cycle at 3:08. There was also one at 1:50, one at 12:35, one at 11:20, and one at 9:45. He had heard exactly one of them.

Core line: "For the first couple of weeks you are going to notice it, and it will be at two or three in the morning, because that is when the house is quietest and your sleep is thinnest."

  • She Thought Waking at 2 A.M. Meant She Was Broken. So Was Her Thermostat
    2026/11/05

The phone rings at 3:12 in the morning and the man on the other end tells me his heat pump is on fire.

It is the middle of January, two wet days and then a hard freeze, the kind of night Oklahoma does best. The house is a brick ranch on a county road north of Kingfisher, heat pump instead of a gas furnace, and the people in it bought the place last summer. He is retired, up from Texas, and this is the first winter of his life under a heat pump. Every house he ever owned had a furnace, and a furnace never once put on a show in the yard.

He woke at three, the way he tells me he does most nights. Lay there a while. Then the outdoor unit changed pitch, there was a whoosh, and when he got to the kitchen window a white cloud was rolling off the top of the thing and straight up into the dark. The fan had quit. He put his hand over a register and the air coming out was cool. So he did what any sensible man would do with a machine he thinks is burning: he shut it off at the thermostat and called the number on the sticker.

I have taken that call more times than I could count. Forty-seven years of three in the morning, and most of it was not an emergency. But I have learned not to say that first.

I asked him four things. Was there a smell? No. Was it smoke or was it a cloud? White, and it was gone a few feet above the unit. Did it sound like a kettle or like a whoosh? Whoosh. Did the outdoor fan stop? Yes. Four for four.

I told him to turn it back on at the thermostat. Not the breaker, just the thermostat. Then go stand at the window with the clock and give it ten minutes. If the fan was not running by then, call me and I would come. Then I hung up, which is the hardest part of that call.

Core line: "Go back to sleep" does not work for the same reason it has never worked: lying there trying to force sleep is the one thing that keeps the second sleep from coming."

  • The Late Night Repair Call She Never Would Have Made at Noon
    2026/11/04

The email landed at 3:14 in the morning, and by the time I read it at six the man who wrote it was already sorry.

It was the last week of May, the first stretch of nights where the air conditioner has to run past dark and keep running. Brick ranch north of Kingfisher, built in the nineties, with a split system about seventeen years old that had done its job without much complaint. He is a composite, like everybody on this show, stitched together out of forty-seven years of people, but you know him. Works days. Wife, a teenager, a dog that sheds on the return grille. Not a complainer.

The house had been seventy-four when they went to bed. By midnight it was seventy-eight. He got up at two, put his hand over a register, felt air that was cool but barely moving, and went outside to listen to the unit. It was running. That was the part that got him. It was running and it was losing.

So he sat down at the kitchen table in his shorts with his phone and did what people do at two in the morning. He searched. He found an article about the average cost of a new system. He found a forum where somebody said seventeen years is borrowed time. By 3:14 he had written me an email asking for a quote on a complete replacement, inside and out, this week, and he said I did not need to come look at the old one first because he already knew.

At nine o'clock my phone rang and it was him, and the first thing he said was, "I need to apologize for that email."

I told him he did not. He said he had read it over coffee and did not recognize the person who wrote it. He asked whether a plain service call might be enough to start with. I said that was exactly where I would have started anyway.

Core line: "At the same time, the longer you have been awake, the weaker the part of your brain that does the braking, the part that says wait, consider, look at the other side."
