In this episode, we are in the land of Anahuac (which is now part of Mexico). A race of giants inhabited the earth for 4800 years after its creation. These giants, enemies of both gods and men, caused chaos and destruction until a great flood was sent by the heavenly rulers to wipe them out. However, one crafty giant named Xelhua and his six brothers managed to survive by hiding in caves on Mount Tlaloc.
After the flood receded, Xelhua and his brothers emerged and decided to build a massive pyramid in Cholula as a symbol of their triumph over the gods and as a safeguard against future disasters. They enslaved a multitude of men to work on the pyramid, bringing materials from afar and constructing it with incredible speed.
As the pyramid neared completion, the gods, angered by Xelhua's arrogance, sent a flaming rock from the heavens to destroy it. The upper portion of the pyramid collapsed, killing thousands, including Xelhua himself. The remaining fragment of the pyramid became a symbol of reverence to the god Quetzal, and the event led to the diversification of languages among the tribes of the region.
The story serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of arrogance and defiance against divine powers.
