  • Nicole's Rider Position Collectives
    2025/08/03
A question sometimes deserves more than a simple answer. In today's notes, I summarize my explaination of the two rider position collectives at the end of the USDF dressage tests: Rider Position and Seat, and Rider's Correct and Effective use of Aids. I take inspiration from Erik Herbermann, Debbie Riehl-Rodriguez, and Fran Severn to help round out my notes.

  • Bengt's Extended Trot Definition
    2025/06/19
Sometimes, all it takes is one sentence being italicized and emphasized to make you question if you really know the meaning behind it. In today's notes, we take inspiration from Bengt Ljungquist's book Practical Dressage Manual and go into the extended trot and how to it's more than just a red panda definition.

  • Udo's 7 Laws of Horsemanship
    2025/06/08

My thoughts on a section of Udo Burger's The way to perfect horsemanship. Udo was an accomplished veterinary surgeon, animal physchologist, and respected judge... but his texts are all translated from their original german. Some of the sentence structure and original meanings of his phrases do need to be injested and interpreted a few times for the full effect. His unique combination of physical and mental understanding of the horse from both a scientific and anecdotal background make this book jam packed with knowledge. I have yet to find another writer who is as diverse and all encompasing as he is. This is the third time I've read this book and I'm still picking up more details.

Fair warning... In my opinion, Udo was a man of his time. Some of the things he says about people as metaphores are old-fashioned and outdated. Nothing too terrible, but just somethign to note if you're picking up his book.
