In June 1974, at Royal Ascot, a horse called King Levanstell completed the race ahead of the Queen's own runner. Standing in the winner's enclosure was a thirty-five-year-old Hindu man from a village in southern Trinidad, who had arrived in London fourteen years earlier with nothing and drove a lorry for a living. By then he owned a hundred racehorses and had gone through twenty-four Rolls-Royces. Twelve years later, he was eating dinner at a Denny's near Miami airport when a detective slid into the booth beside him, pressed a gun into his side, and told him to get up and act like a gentleman. Because he was now being charged with double murder. This is the story of that one man, his life and the one afternoon that changed it all. This is the story of Krishna Maharaj.

Every year on August 15, Bangladesh remembers a family destroyed inside its own home. In 1975, soldiers entered a residence in Dhaka and assassinated Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with most of his family. Decades later, the date was observed across the country as the National Day of Mourning. But on August 15, 2013, as Bangladesh remembered the violence of the past, another home in Dhaka was becoming the scene of a mystery of its own. The apartment belonged to Mahfuzur Rahman, an inspector with the Special Branch of the Bangladesh Police, and his wife, Swapna Rahman. From the outside, there was little reason to pay attention to the family living behind its closed doors. Until the following day, when something inside that apartment brought the police to its entrance. What they discovered would become one of the most unsettling and fiercely debated criminal cases in Bangladesh, raising questions that extended far beyond what had happened that night. This is the story of that home, and the family that lived behind its doors. This is the story of Mahfuzur and Swapna Rahman.

On a Friday morning in July 2018, a woman parked a silver Mercedes on a busy street in one of the safest, prettiest neighbourhoods in the state of Virginia. Her grown daughter was in the passenger seat. She got out to put money in the parking meter, which took her perhaps forty seconds, and in those forty seconds the back door of her car opened and a man got in. He was covered in blood from the arms down, with a trail of blood on the pavement behind him. He was not wearing pants and had a marker in his hand. He did not say anything to her at all. What she did next was lock him inside her own car and stand on the pavement screaming for somebody to call the police. She held him there, in her back seat, until they came. She had never seen him before in her life. Nobody on that street had. And upstairs, above the shop she was parked outside, was the reason for all this blood. A crime scene so brutal, it shook the state of Virginia. This is the story of that man covered in blood and the one man laying dead in the shop above. In 1951, one of the most famous men in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, was a batsman. Some of the greatest players in the world believed he was a genius. Frank Worrell said that if he were choosing a dream team made up of the best cricketers on the planet, he would be the first person he picked. Garry Sobers called him the greatest batsman who had ever lived. And was not just admired for how well he played. He was a celebrity. He walked out to bat wearing a silk shirt and a cravat. He practised his shots in front of a mirror every morning. Women who had never watched a cricket match before came only because he was playing. And on the evening of 9 October 1951, the country’s greatest sporting hero was asleep at a friend’s house in Colombo 7, recovering from an afternoon of drinking. That’s when the police walked in and arrested him for the murder of his wife. This is the story of that man, that woman, and a case that took Ceylon by storm. On the night of the 29th of November 2012, in the same California county, two men ended up flat on their backs about ten miles apart. One of them was 66 years old, from a small town in Punjab. He got into IIT Delhi, then got on a plane to America in 1970 and built success. That night he was lying on the floor of his own seven thousand square foot mansion, in one of the safest towns in the United States, with tape across his mouth. The other was twenty-six. He was homeless. He had been homeless most of his life. That night he was lying on the pavement outside a corner shop in downtown San Jose with enough alcohol in his blood to stop a person breathing. The two of them had never met. Neither knew the other existed. By morning, one of them was dead and the other one was going to be charged with killing him. This is the story of the murder of Raveesh Kumra.
